Empower Playgrounds Inc.

Empower Playgrounds Inc. (EPI) is a nonprofit organization focused on enhancing educational opportunities in rural, off-the-grid African villages by developing and installing playground equipment that converts the energy of children’s play into renewable power for portable lighting.

As children PLAY on the equipment, a portion of their energy is captured and converted to electricity that is used to charge portable LED lanterns. The lanterns are then used to LIGHT their classrooms during the day and their homes at night, enabling them to study and LEARN in ways not previously possible due to the absence of electricity in these villages. EPI partners with internationally established playground company Playworld Systems Inc. and solar energy company Goal Zero for equipment manufacture, while the LED lanterns are made possible through a partnership with Energizer Battery.
