About Us

The Sphere Project is a voluntary initiative encompassing a broad consortium of humanitarian actors, aimed at improving the quality of humanitarian assistance to people affected by disaster and armed conflict as well as the accountability of humanitarian agencies and states to their constituents, donors and affected populations.

Our vision:

A world where the right of all people affected by disaster to re-establish their lives and livelihoods is recognised and acted upon in ways that respect their voice and promote their dignity, livelihoods and security.

Who are we?

The Sphere Project was launched in 1997 by a group of humanitarian NGOs and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Today, its Board is made up of 17 global networks of humanitarian agencies, including some of the biggest and oldest in the sector. The Sphere Project also embraces national NGOs, UN agencies, funding partners, governments, advocacy groups, community-based organizations and individual actors around the world who use the Handbook and contribute to the Project. A small team based in Geneva helps ensure that support services, materials and training opportunities are available to all interested parties. Funding is provided by Board member organizations and donor agencies.

The Sphere Project aims to upholds minimum standards via its 2011 Handbook Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response. It's rights based approach puts the rights of disaster and conflict affected populations at the center of humanitarian action. The minimum standards focuses include water, food, shelter and health.
