Yellow Wood Learning Community

About Us

Yellow Wood is an educational community designed to support the learning and goals of teenagers aged 13 to 18 who would like to pursue their studies in a setting other than the traditional school model. Some like to call us a school for convenience sake (although we are not legally a school) and yes, we look much like school insofar as teenagers come Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm to a physical location to study under the tuteledge of various educators, mentors, faciltators, artsists, performers, yogis, scientists....But we do not give grades or examinations, nor do we grant diplomas. We also believe learning can happen anywhere, so although we meet at our location, classes can happen in the garden, at the beach, on a boat, anywhere!

We believe the traditional model of education, shaped by an industrial production model, is not only less relevant today, but often harmful to many teenagers during the most productive and exciting stage of their lives. As youth need to be exploring new ideas and passions in an environment where they can fail (happily) and where they can question all assumptions, the traditional model of education restricts such vital activities.
