About Us

The Center for Peacebuilding and Development is an academic center in the School of International Service at American University. The Center believes that peace, economic, and social prosperity are manifest when differences among peoples and cultures become sources of knowledge and unity and when governance reflects social justice, respect for human rights, and democratic practices. In addition, the Center recognizes the inherent value of local resources in constructing frameworks for analysis that evaluate linkages among social, political, cultural, economic and civic structures.

Our mission is to promote a cross-cultural approach to developing and expanding research and practices in peace education, peacebuilding evaluation, conflict resolution, religion and peace, and environmental peacebuilding. The Center's vision is the establishment of new and innovative approaches to peacebuilding and development that promote just, inclusive, and sustainable communities around the world.
