Free Union Country School

About Us

Founded in 1984, Free Union Country School is an independent elementary school, serving 90 PS through 5th grade students. From its inception, the school community has consistently sought to cultivate a committed and highly educated faculty, to maintain a high degree of parental involvement, and to nurture in its students a life-long love of learning.

Located just outside Charlottesville, VA, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the school takes advantage of its rural setting and beautiful, five-acre campus to support its hands-on, experiential-based approach to learning. Classrooms are rich with opportunities for group and independent study ranging from Ellis Island immigration simulations and Chinese New Year Parades to independent research projects and frequent oral presentations. The faculty incorporates a variety of teaching methods in traditional subjects and in a broad range of enrichment classes.

As indicated in its mission statement:

With the cooperation of parents, students, teachers, staff and friends, Free Union Country School is a community where learning is valued, individuals are respected, diversity is understood as a strength, and teamwork is rewarded.

The school's program develops independence, responsibility, self-confident decision-making, and each child's natural desire to learn.
