Swayam Krishi Sangam NGO
Swayam Krishi Sangam gave birth to micro finance activities of present SKS Microfinance Institute and continued to serve the marginalized communities in needy areas when micro finance activities were taken over by SKS MFL.
At present SKS is focusing on two thematic areas of development: Education and Ultra Poverty. We have a compelling mission to provide affordable quality education to rural poor children through our Bodhi Academies. Already Today, SKS runs 53 such academies (preschools and primary schools) with 3000 students, 200 staff across 200 villages and peri-urban centers of Nalgonda, Medak, Warangal and Khammam districts of Andhra Pradesh. The program has grown over 6 times in student enrollment in 2010. Bodhi is now fast expanding to outreach to 200,000 students in next 5 years.
Our second important focus area is Ultra Poverty. We have piloted the Ultra Poor Graduation Program in 2007 in Narayankhed and Medak districts with 426 Ultra Poor Households. Based on the piilot wherein we could graduate all member households except eight out of 426, we have expanded Ultra Poor Program into Odisha and Koraput districts. We have made Medak our focus district on ultra poverty eradication outreaching 3,000 more ultra poor households in this year. SKS's Ultra Poor Program scientifically targets the bottom of the pyramid extreme poor, employing participatory identification tools. Our intervention logic is based on seamless and integrated services in the thematic areas of social, health and economic advancement to the identified extreme poor households with the aim of mainstreaming and reconnecting them to lost livelihood opportunities.
