EFTC's mission is to break the cycle of poverty through education and empowerment. We work in partnership with disadvantaged families, children and young adults in Guatemala, Central America to ensure they develop the tools they need to break free from the cycle of poverty.
The statistics of Guatemala read more like those of Sub-Saharan Africa than the Americas.
It has the lowest literacy rates in the whole of Central America, with over half of the population living in abject poverty and almost 50% of children under the age of five suffering from chronic malnutrition. Those living in poverty face strong prejudice and have limited opportunities due to their economic backgrounds.
Over 600 children and young adults study at EFTC's School of Hope in Guatemala, from Kindergarten all the way through to College, in pursuit of their dreams. The families of our students cannot afford the cost of books, school supplies, transportation, uniform and food.
Without the work of EFTC, our students' parents wouldn’t be able to send them to school. The children would have likely joined the 20% of Guatemalan youngsters who form part of the country’s labour force if it wasn’t for the EFTC community. Where previously these children faced desperate futures, they now have positive choices.
