Re-election campaign of New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.

New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli is running for re-election. He is the sole trustee and manager of the New York State Common Retirement Fund. Under his leadership, the Fund has come to be widely regarded as one of the most transparent, accountable, and best-funded public pension funds in the country. His innovative approach to shareholder activism has led to many initiatives for sustainability and environmental cleanup and has helped to improve workplace protections. In addition to corporate governance, he has increased the Fund’s commitment to the In-State Private Equity Program, helping to create thousands of private-sector jobs through its investments in more than 200 businesses statewide, including biotech, digital media, and high-tech manufacturing firms.

Tom’s commitment to making government more open and transparent can also be seen in his role as the state’s chief fiscal watchdog. His Open Book New York website contains online search tools that include detailed revenue, spending, debt and property tax cap information for 3,100 local governments. Nearly 50,000 state contracts and amendments can also be searched, along with major spending areas for state agencies. Data is updated daily to include approximately 10,000 new payments his office processes each business day.

DiNapoli has uncovered billions in waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer money. His audits of the Medicaid program have brought critical statewide changes in how the $45 billion program is managed and led to arrests and prosecution for abusers of the program. He has proposed legislation and Constitutional amendments to reform New York State’s broken budget process by increasing reserves for an adequate rainy day fund, restricting the use of “one-shots,” and enhancing budget transparency.
