About Us

The Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project (MAIP) works to prevent and correct the conviction of innocent people in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. MAIP also works to ensure that its freed and exonerated clients have the support they need when they leave prison.

MAIP is one of the most successful of the more than 60 innocence organizations in the country. Since 2000, MAIP has helped free 44 innocent people who served more than 800 years in prison and has helped pass 19 laws that would make it harder to convict innocent people, easier to correct those convictions, or ensure that exonerees are compensated for the harm they experienced at the hands of the state.

The Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project is a member and leader in the Innocence Network, a coalition of organizations dedicated to freeing the innocent and preventing wrongful convictions worldwide.
