    Description

    About Richmond Shoreline Alliance

Richmond Shoreline Alliance (RSA) is a grassroots community organization dedicated to environmental protection, restoration, and justice for the Richmond shoreline. The city’s shoreline has a 150-year history of industrial hazardous waste sites with minimal buffers between those sites and dense residential zones with schools and other sensitive locations.

Our primary focus is the Zeneca/Campus Bay site on Richmond’s southeast shoreline. Here Stauffer Chemical Company manufactured herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and sulfuric acid for 100 years, disposing of byproducts and hazardous waste onsite and into San Francisco Bay. We’re working with our partners and community members to demand a full and complete cleanup of this Superfund-qualified site.

RSA is proud to have the San Francisco Bay Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility as our fiscal sponsor. PSR works to protect human life from the gravest threats to health and survival.

    Position Overview

Under supervision of RSA Coordinator, the Community Engagement Associate will oversee a community outreach and public education campaign in Richmond focused on the Zeneca/Campus Bay site. The Community Engagement Associate’s goal is to make critical information accessible to the community and to meaningfully engage the community through various methods of strategic outreach.

Some of these methods will include tabling at community events in Richmond and on the shoreline, planning and executing virtual and in person meetings, organizing advocacy opportunities, and door-knocking.

The position entails occasional evening and weekend work, but the expectation is that the Community Engagement Associate will perform their work during regular business hours.

    Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Developing methodology and strategy (with staff support) and overseeing the implementation of community engagement efforts.
    • Providing direct supervision and mentorship to Community Outreach interns.
    • Coordinating with the rest of RSA’s planning team and with Technical Advisor consultants.
    • Planning, publicizing, and participating in targeted community meetings.
    • Participating in community events that align with community outreach efforts.
    • Developing outreach materials such as flyers, posters, and door hangers.

    Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess some of the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

    • Passion for cultivating relationships with community groups, media and individuals in Richmond.
    • An existing relationship to Richmond (e.g. someone who lives or works here) is a requirement.
    • Must bring experience working with environmental justice communities.
    • Experience with creative outreach and public education.
    • Experience coordinating projects involving multiple partners and stakeholders from start to finish, including schedule and budget management.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Fluency in Spanish is highly desired.
    • Demonstrated interest in protecting and improving environmental and community health.
    • Flexibility, enthusiasm, dependability, and the ability to work effectively with many different types of people.
    • The ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team while also being self-motivated, and comfortable with taking initiative.
    • Organization and attention to detail.
    • Familiarity with or ability to learn computer applications such as Zoom, Microsoft Office Suite, Canva, and Google Suite. Graphic design experience is a plus.

    Compensation

This is a part-time position, 20 hours a week at $30/hr. This is a contract position ending November 2026, with the possibility of renewal dependent on funding.

RSA is an equal opportunity employer that strives to recruit a diverse workforce and provide an equitable and inclusive workplace for all.
