    The Associates of the Boston Public Library invites applications for the position of Executive Director, a visionary and entrepreneurial leader to guide the organization's continued partnership with the Boston Public Library's Special Collections. This is a distinctive opportunity to lead a mission-driven nonprofit that plays a vital role in preserving and expanding public access to one of the nation's most significant library collections.An independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a fifty-year legacy, the Associates engages the public with the BPL's wide-ranging Special Collections through innovative programming, events, and opportunities for individual exploration. The organization is deeply committed to fostering public appreciation for the Library's cultural and historical treasures. The Special Collections Department at the Boston Public Library facilitates discovery and fosters public engagement with rare, distinctive, and culturally significant materials held by Boston Public Library. To fulfill this mission, Special Collections staff acquire, describe, preserve, and interpret our collections for the people of Boston, the Commonwealth, and communities of researchers and learners everywhere. We are committed to sustainable, responsive, user-centered stewardship while providing equitable access to the collections and services of the department. BPL special collections are available for the study and enjoyment of all.The Executive Director serves as the public face of the Associates, building meaningful connections with members, donors, the broader community, and colleagues across the Boston Public Library system. This leadership position is responsible for executing the organization's strategic vision, leading fundraising initiatives, and managing daily operations. The Executive Director oversees a small, dedicated team, works closely with an engaged Board of Directors, and collaborates with BPL leadership to develop and deliver high impact programs that increase the public's engagement with the Special Collections. The position reports to the Chair of the Board of the Associates. The selected Executive Director will foster an environment of trust and capitalize on fundraising opportunities through strategic vision and partnerships. The Executive Director will strengthen internal operations and expand external stakeholder engagement to secure the Associates' growth and reputation across Boston.The Board of Directors envisions the Executive Director as someone with notable leadership experience, particularly in non-profit management, fundraising, and active community engagement. An ideal candidate will have a proven track record fostering robust relationships with boards and establish mutually beneficial philanthropic endeavors. Additionally, the candidate will bring an ability to steward and cultivate donor relationships through exceptional fundraising prowess and sophistication. Key attributes include exceptional communication skills, employee engagement commitment, visionary thinking, adaptability, authenticity, and respectfulness.
