    Description

Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) seeks applicants to host for projects through the Equal Justice Works, Skadden, Justice Catalyst, and other Fellowships to begin in Fall 2026.

Ideal candidates will be law students entering their third year, recent graduates who expect to complete a judicial clerkship in the summer of 2026, or lawyers who are otherwise eligible for these fellowships. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to providing high-quality legal services to low-income families or in promoting civil, human, or environmental rights, an excellent academic record, and a connection to the population or the issue in their proposed project. Fluency in Spanish or another critical-needs language is preferred for those seeking to work in our immigration project, but not required. L4GG is a distributed organization with no central office, so candidates are welcome to work from their own homes.

The fellowship, if awarded, will begin in the fall of 2026 and is anticipated to last two years. The fellow will work closely with experienced attorneys. If awarded, the starting annual salary for this position is $72,500.

    Potential Projects

L4GG will consider well-researched and impactful projects touching on any areas of L4GG’s focus, including democracy and the rule of law, civil and human rights (including immigrants rights, reproductive rights, health equity, racial justice, and more), and climate change and environmental justice. We are open to local, regional, or national projects. We are especially interested in the following types of projects:

    Climate Change & Environmental Justice

    • Projects that provide direct assistance to cities, municipalities, vulnerable communities and state decision makers about how to implement ambitious climate projects to lower their greenhouse gas emissions and to address climate equity, including projects focused on the Direct Pay provision of the IRA. A fellow desiring to work on Direct Pay ideally would have experience in tax law or policy.
    • Projects that defend federal climate and environmental justice funding against rescission attempts, audits, and administrative challenges, providing legal support to threatened grantees and frontline organizations.
    • Projects that provide legal assistance to historically excluded communities impacted by climate change, including providing guidance to disadvantaged communities on how best to receive federal and state funding for climate equity projects.
    • Projects that work to provide pro bono legal assistance to frontline environmental justice organizations with support against Congressional inquiries, investigations, and other types of targeted harassment.
    • Projects that seek to promote safe, affordable, and clean drinking water and implementing state/local policies to address this issue. A fellow desiring to work on this issue ideally would have a background in water law and the Safe Water Drinking Act.

    Civil Rights

    • Projects that support justice for groups historically excluded and marginalized based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity, especially at the state level.
    • Projects that mitigate direct harms stemming from racially discriminatory policies.
    • Projects that advance transgender rights by identifying emerging legal challenges, support strategic litigation efforts, and provide legal guidance to healthcare providers, advocacy organizations, and individuals navigating the rapidly changing legal landscape affecting transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people.

    Immigration

    • Projects that support immigrants' rights in the current climate of mass deportations and restrictions on existing immigration pathways, focusing on providing legal assistance to individuals and families facing removal proceedings, supporting immigrants with pathways to security, and developing strategies to shield vulnerable immigrant communities from federal enforcement actions.

    Reproductive Rights and Health Equity

    • Projects that support reproductive justice and access to reproductive care, particularly in states with significant barriers to accessing care post Dobbs. We have a special interest in a project that would work in partnership with clinicians and hospitals in restrictive states to craft protocols that allow providers to practice as expansively as possible while staying safely within the bounds of applicable law.
    • Projects that increase access to healthcare and medicine for historically excluded populations.

    Impact Litigation

    • Projects that support and expand L4GG's Pro Bono Litigation Corps by providing research and support for strategic litigation, or focusing on specific practice areas such as defending against executive overreach, protecting constitutional rights, or supporting frontline organizations facing legal challenges.

One of L4GG’s key strategies is mobilizing remote pro bono attorneys from our network of more than 150 law firms and corporate legal departments and 125,000+ interested attorneys. As such, successful projects will include pro bono mobilization as a strategy.

    About L4GG

Founded in 2016, L4GG identifies where lawyers can make the greatest impact and mobilize them to defend democracy and the rule of law, protect civil and human rights, and advance environmental justice for all Americans. With innovative uses of technology and a focus on remote programs, we are able to overcome legal deserts and turn more lawyers across the country into change agents for equity. We currently run programs in the following areas: federal fund protection, impact litigation, immigration, climate change and environmental justice, racial justice, and reproductive rights and health equity. We also respond to emergent legal needs.
