Build the Maps Behind a Global Student Sustainability Campaign

Are you passionate about using mapping and design to tell powerful stories? Use your GIS and visualization skills to bring climate data to life and help young changemakers lead a global movement for justice and sustainability.

Turning Green is seeking a GIS & Geovisualization Intern to help bring Project Green Challenge (PGC) 2025 to life through beautiful, customizable, and web-embedded maps. From highlighting student participation to visualizing impact across continents, your work will support a transformative and dynamic student-led climate action movement, empowering changemakers around the world.

About Turning Green and PGC 2025

Turning Green is a global student-led movement committed to cultivating a healthy, just, and resilient planet through education and advocacy focused on climate justice, environmental sustainability, and public health. It equips students to lead change in their communities and beyond—mobilizing a generation to act with urgency, integrity, and purpose.

Project Green Challenge (PGC) is Turning Green’s flagship initiative—an annual 30-day global call to action that engages students in transformative daily challenges throughout October. The program builds knowledge, fosters agency, and inspires bold action on critical issues such as climate justice, ethical consumption, food systems, and public health. Since its launch in 2011, PGC has activated more than 342,000 students across 180+ countries and culminates in an in-person summit where finalists collaborate, lead, and scale their impact.

    What You’ll Do

As our GIS & Geovisualization Intern, you will help design and build interactive, visually compelling maps that capture the energy and global scale of PGC 2025. Your work will translate participation data into digital experiences that inform, inspire, and drive engagement across our platforms.

    In this role, you will:

    • Design interactive maps and dashboards that visualize participation, regional trends, and thematic data for PGC 2025
    • Create customized visuals using tools such as Mapbox, Tableau, Google Earth, or similar platforms, ensuring they are easily embeddable and site-ready
    • Transform complex datasets into clean, accessible visuals that support public storytelling, campaign engagement, and reporting
    • Ensure all map-based content is responsive, accessible, and aligned with our brand style across desktop and mobile devices
    • Work closely with the communications, web, and data teams to integrate geovisual content into existing platforms and storytelling frameworks
    • Maintain and update visuals by troubleshooting issues, running quality checks, and optimizing performance throughout the campaign

    Required Qualifications

    • Recent graduate (strongly preferred) or current undergraduate in Information Design and Visualization, Geovisualization, Spatial Data Science and Design, or a related field
    • Demonstrated experience using mapping and data visualization tools such as Mapbox, Leaflet.js, Tableau, D3.js, or Google Earth
    • Strong visual storytelling skills with an eye for detail, layout, and clarity
    • Familiarity with web design principles and embedding map-based content
    • A portfolio or sample work(s) that reflects both technical ability and design polish
    • Comfort working independently and collaborating remotely with a mission-driven team
    • Deep interest in sustainability, youth empowerment, and the role of digital tools in public engagement
