    About OIC of America

OIC of America is fighting for economic freedom for all forgotten poor people in America.

In 1964, Reverend Leon H. Sullivan founded the first OIC training center in an abandoned jailhouse in North Philadelphia. The dilapidated building was renovated using donations from people in the community and an anonymous grant. What was once a place of condemnation and restriction had become a place of hope and opportunity, hence the name Opportunity Industrialization Centers (OIC).

Forged during the struggles of the 1960’s Civil Rights protests, the OIC of America and its affiliate network have played a distinctive role in attacking racial discrimination in the workplace while securing decent jobs for hundreds of thousands of poor people, mostly African Americans.

Given the current labor crisis and a national call to attack long-standing inequities and racial injustices, the OIC network is well-positioned to be agents for stability, opportunity, and economic prosperity for people left out and left behind). OIC provides job and life skills training and matches its graduates with the employment needs of local businesses.

OIC has a nationwide training network to prepare many more poor people in rural and urban America for living wage jobs in information and technology, banking, financial services, building trades, and food production.

As a trusted partner in our communities, we believe in making big impacts. We now run over150 programs throughout the United States. Our network of 25 affiliates in 19 states and the District of Columbia represents and supports the underserved. Helping People Help Themselves through a value system focused on the hand-up rather than a hand-out approach, we are building the middle class.
