    Description

    Welcome to Camp Indigo!

Camp Indigo is a summer day camp for transgender and non-binary youth ages 5-17 dedicated to providing an unparalleled, joy-focused camp experience. Launched in 2015 in the San Francisco Bay Area with just 20 campers, Camp Indigo has grown to serve more than 1,000 youth annually across five locations: Akron (OH), Austin (TX), Boulder (CO), Minneapolis (MN), and Oakland (CA).

Camp Indigo believes that it is the right of every trans and non-binary young person to experience a “normal” day camp without the burden of otherness. We are a camp for trans kids, not about trans kids. For us this means spending our days running through sprinklers and making watermelons explode, creating comic books, and taking teenagers on trips to local thrift stores and picnicking on a lake. Life can be hard for trans youth; camp shouldn’t be.

    Community Programs Manager Role Description

This is a brand new position and only the third role on our year-round staff (though we have 55 employees over the summer!). This role will require an incredible amount of self drive, proactive communication, adaptability, and creativity. There is no playbook here; we are creating it together.

The Community Programs Manager will develop, lead, and be accountable for four core areas of work:

    • Enhance camper well-being and belonging. Ensure every camper feels supported and included throughout their camp experience — for example, by creating identity-affirming programming and support for neurodiverse campers.
    • Promote our model of growing up Camp Indigo. Provide sustained opportunities for engagement, growth, and leadership for teens — including creating a CIT (Counselor in Training) program for returning and alumni campers.
    • Strengthen parent and caregiver networks. Build a sustainable system of connection and mutual support among families — including launching initiatives like the Camp Indigo Parent Collaborative.
    • Foster year-round community engagement. Extend the joy and connection of camp beyond the summer through ongoing learning opportunities, social gatherings, and other connections with prospective, current, and alumni campers and their families.

You will report to the Executive Director who will direct, evaluate, cheerlead, and co-create impactful work with you across our entire Camp Indigo community.

Must-Have Skills and Strengths for the Community Programs Manager

Camp Indigo believes experience can come in many forms, and therefore has no higher education requirement for any of our roles. However, we require a history of impact (5+ years) demonstrating these skills:

    • Imagining, developing, and implementing programs that serve both youth and adults
    • A strong proficiency in project management — including planning, implementation, time management, and coordination across functions, to implement long-term strategic initiatives and projects that advance organizational goals.
    • Supporting programs across multiple sites that ensure a cohesive culture across the organization while celebrating what makes each site special.
    • Networking and relationship-building with a wide range of stakeholders, including families, youth, community leaders, funders, colleagues, and business professionals.
    • Working independently, with self drive and flexibility, and a proven track record of high productivity in remote and asynchronous working environments.
    • Creating programming that serves intersecting identities and lived experiences - specifically related to gender, race, neuro typical and neuro diverse thinking, and mental health.
    • Providing exceptional customer service with professional and human-centered communication, whether virtual or in-person
    • Comfortability with ambiguity and change; approaching new challenges with initiative, flexibility, and adaptability.
    • Modeling a growth mindset, welcoming feedback and continual learning/capacity-building in the spirit of team and self growth.

Highly desired, but not mandatory experience and strengths:

    • Directly working with the transgender and gender-expansive youth community and their families
    • Public speaking to a wide variety of audiences
    • A strong community network in a Camp Indigo metro area
    • Experience leading nonprofit programming, communication, and fundraising
    • Proficiency with our tech platforms for team collaboration and community engagement, such as Slack, Google Drive, MailChimp, and Canva.

Of course, the Community Programs Manager should hold a deep personal commitment to Camp Indigo’s mission and values, and resonate with our core values of lead with yes, joy in everything we do, invite each other in, and community above all else.

    Physical Requirements:

We are committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities in our job application procedures and throughout employment. If you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, you may contact us at thecampindigo@gmail.com

Employees must be comfortable with the requirements of remote work (use of computer, video and audio communication, internet access, mobile phone, etc.) and be prepared for occasional travel that will likely require being on an airplane. Additionally, summer months require visits to physical camp locations which are loud, high energy, and with many things happening at once.

    Compensation and Remote Work

This role reports to the Executive Director, and the anticipated hiring range for a full time role is $65,000 - $73,000 depending on experience. Camp Indigo covers 100% of employee medical health care premiums and 4 weeks of PTO (which can be used September - May). We are open to discussing what a 50-80% part time role might look like for the right candidate.

Most of the calendar year (mid-August to end of May) allows for flexibility and fully remote work aside from the occasional all-staff meetings. Life is for living and your job at Camp Indigo should be a value-add, not soul sucking.

    Ready to Apply?

Camp Indigo especially encourages trans and non-binary candidates to apply. Applications are welcome from folks in all 50 states, with preference for candidates living within one of the states where we currently run camps (California, Colorado, Minnesota, Ohio, and Texas).

Finally, these applications are read by real, live humans, not robots. The best way to stand out is by being yourself (and hopefully yourself is thoughtful, experienced, and engaging!). Often candidates see a job description and think to themselves, “I am perfect for this!” But then they don’t do a good job of communicating why. Enthusiasm is super valuable here, but vision and experience is key. We hope that’s helpful, and we look forward to learning more about you!
