    Position Title: Writing & Critical Thinking Instructor (10th Grade, 11th grade)

    Reports to: Program Director

    Direct Reports Include: None

    Location: In-person at Sherwin Williams Global Headquarters in downtown Cleveland

    Work Schedule:

    10th Grade: 9:15a-11:15a on 7 Saturdays in Fall semester (in-person), plus some preparation and review of curriculum (remote), and providing feedback on student assignments (remote). Class dates: 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8, 11/15, 11/22, and 12/6.

    11th Grade: 9:15a-11:15a on 3 Saturdays during Fall semester (in-person), plus some preparation and review of curriculum (remote), and providing feedback on student assignments (remote). Class dates: 11/16, 11/23, 12/7.

    Compensation:

    10th grade: $1000/semester

    11th grade: $500/semester

    Mission

    Exhibits an intimate understanding of the Minds Matter mission to include who we serve as well the socioeconomic and cultural issues the organization aims to address.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Review lesson plans and class materials using Google Drive/Google Classroom
    • Deliver 90-minute lessons based on pre-established Minds Matter curriculum
    • Facilitate class discussions on common readings, allow for in-class reading time
    • Provide constructive, consistent, and timely feedback to student written assignments
    • Communicate progress and expectations to students through Google Classroom
    • Communicate session content and progress to program staff
    • Analyze student progress to determine challenge areas and develop targeted lessons
    • Track and celebrate milestones and achievements in student writing
    • Provide a safe, challenging, and dynamic learning environment that meets the educational needs of our students

    Cohort Instruction Goals

    10th Grade: Strengthen high school-level skills in exploring ideas and writing. In the fall semester, this occurs through a literature based unit centered on the text “The House on Mango Street.

    11th Grade: Develop college-level writing skills including reading critically, exploring ideas, and writing. Cover composing effective personal essays to use in the summer programs and college application process.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

    • Excellent Communication: prompt and thoughtful communication is required.
    • Effective Instruction: the ability to explain new ideas and unfamiliar concepts in a clear and concise way, taking into account that students will have diverse cultural backgrounds and academic abilities.
    • Strong Commitment: the ability to attend every scheduled Saturday writing session
    • Adaptability: the ability to deliver lessons/activities that will resonate with our students

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree (at minimum); Master’s degree and teaching experience preferred
    • Demonstrated ability to deliver learning experiences and exercises related to curriculum
    • Reliable transportation to session site
