    Description

    Deputy Director of Communications

    United Federation of Teachers (UFT)

New York, NY – Hybrid (3+ days onsite)

The United Federation of Teachers (UFT), a union representing over 200,000 New York City public school educators and other professionals, is seeking an experienced communications strategist, editor and manager who is passionate about public education and the labor movement.

As Deputy Director of Communications, you will help lead a dynamic team responsible for informing, engaging and mobilizing members through a wide range of platforms — from social media and email to print and website. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this senior-level role helps oversee department operations, manages timelines and content strategy for major union initiatives, and provides editorial and strategic guidance across channels.

    Key Responsibilities

      • Assist in managing the Communications Department and supervising staff.
      • Lead and support the social media team, ensuring timely, strategic and high-quality content.
      • Write talking points and remarks for union leadership.
      • Develop and manage timelines and promotion plans for major union events.
      • Support and ensure consistency across all union-affiliated social media accounts.
      • Serve as the primary liaison to contract social media strategists and external digital partners.
      • Collaborate with union departments and external partners on union campaigns.
      • Oversee digital analytics strategy to drive data-informed decision-making.
      • Support creation and deployment of action tools (emails, texts, petitions, click-to-calls).
      • Provide editorial support to the website and email communications teams.
      • Assist the Director with internal presentations, staff development and department operations.

    Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s degree required (liberal arts preferred); master’s degree a plus.
      • Minimum 8 years of communications experience, ideally in a union, public education or advocacy setting.
      • Exceptional writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
      • Proven experience managing projects, teams and timelines.
      • Strong digital fluency and experience crafting content across platforms.
      • Strategic thinker with a collaborative, proactive approach.
      • Ability to manage multiple priorities while keeping internal stakeholders informed and aligned.

    Requirements

      • Must report onsite at UFT headquarters in Manhattan at least three days per week.
      • Availability to attend evening or weekend events on occasion.

    Compensation and Benefits

      • Salary: $120,000 – $130,000, based on experience.
      • Benefits: Premium-free health insurance, a defined-benefit pension plan, generous paid time off and other top-tier medical and wellness benefits.
      • UFT is an equal opportunity employer.
