    Position: Senior Accountant

    Location: Onsite in Somerville, MA, with hybrid flexibility after 12 months

    FLSA Status: Exempt

    Reports to: Director of Finance and Administration

    Position Summary

    The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the financial operations of Somerville Community Corporation (SCC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to affordable housing, economic opportunity, and community programs. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, this position is responsible for managing and supporting key accounting functions including day-to-day accounting activities, the month-end close process, journal entries, reconciliation processes, and grant reporting. The Senior Accountant will also contribute to process improvements, audit readiness, and the integrity of financial reporting across SCC’s operations and affiliated projects.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

      • Lead monthly close activities including journal entries, trial balance reconciliation, and internal reporting.
      • Maintain general ledger accuracy across SCC including project-specific tracking (e.g., construction projects, grant-funded programs, etc.).
      • Assist in preparing invoices in support of all grants and contracts.
      • Oversee accounts payable in collaboration with the Staff Accountant.
      • Collaborate with the property management accounting team to reconcile intercompany balances.
      • Monitor and report on restricted grants and government contracts, tracking expenditures and supporting compliance requirements.
      • Support the Director of Finance with the annual audit process.
      • Assess and recommend improvements in internal controls, financial processes, and use of accounting systems.
      • Serve as a resource and mentor to staff.
      • Support other accounting functions and special projects as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s degree required, Accounting or Finance preferred.
      • At least 8 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit, public sector, or housing development organization.
      • Intermediate knowledge in GAAP.
      • Experience with Sage 50 or relevant accounting software.
      • Hands-on experience in general ledger management, AP/AR, month-end close, and reconciliations.
      • Experience with grant tracking, reporting, and compliance is desirable.
      • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, and commitment to meeting deadlines.
      • Technically savvy with strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
      • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis.
      • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and work independently.
