    Description

New Yorkers United for Child Care is a new organization made up of parents, and would-be parents, in New York City, who are organizing to build the political power needed to win free universal child care for all. In less than 2 years, we organized 10,000 New Yorkers to save universal 3-K and Pre-K from major funding cuts, launched a campaign for 2-Care, released a platform outlining how we can achieve universal child care and won NYC’s first ever pilot expansion of free universal care to kids 0-2.

We are now hiring for a neighborhood Community Organizer to help us grow our leadership in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx.

We seek a self-motivated, outgoing Community Organizer to build a base of leaders in the Bronx and maintain and grow our current leadership in Northern Manhattan. The organizer will conduct training, education, and leadership development among parents and prospective parents in New York. This role involves engaging parent-leaders in city and state campaigns and coalitions related to our mission. The Community Organizer will plan and facilitate neighborhood and city-wide in-person meetings on weekends—when parents are available—ensure child care options are provided, and implement ongoing leadership development training throughout the year.

    Key Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Senior Organizer include but are not limited to:

    • Base building builds individual contacts in Washington Heights and Bronx residents (primarily parents and would-be parents) wherever they are (at playgrounds, grocery stores, subways, and digitally on WhatsApp etc) who we can then engage as leaders.
    • Leadership Development regularly hold one-on-one (in-person and virtual) meetings with members to develop their investment in the organization and our mission, retain and engage current leadership, and ensure their ideas and concerns are incorporated into our work. The organizer will also facilitate and manage leadership committees.
    • Organize and facilitate community events and monthly in-person neighborhood and city-wide meetings on weekends
      • These meetings are opportunities for members to learn about local political processes, how to win, connect to local representatives, and engage in strategic brainstorming.
      • Coordinate child care and/or activities for children
    • Coordinate community and press events
    • Meet with elected officials and train and recruit leaders to effectively participate in these meetings
    • Create and distribute promotional and educational materials (i.e. flyers for outreach or events and posting on social media)
    • Actively participating in organizational planning - involves updating and refining the organization’s mission and vision and goals and translating goals into concrete action plans.

    Skills, Abilities & Qualifications:

    • 5 years previous experience working as a community organizer, or similar experience.
    • Strong interest in building power among New Yorkers to fight for a more livable and affordable city and state.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with Spanish language skills a plus.
    • Outgoing personality and ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds.
    • Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage diverse projects simultaneously.
    • Positive, proactive and personable team player.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
    • Comfort with social media and digital communication is preferred.

The community organizer will report to the Executive Director.

Note that this position will be following a hybrid work schedule, including two days in the office and three from home - with some days required in the field. Applicants must have the ability to commute to our office in Lower Manhattan, as well as travel throughout New York City during business hours, evenings and weekends, and occasionally to Albany. In the event of weekend work, we are committed to ensuring employees have two days off per week
