    Appellate Advocates, founded in 1995, is a not-for-profit organization that provides high quality post-conviction legal representation to individuals convicted in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Appellate Advocates’ attorneys represent clients in the Appellate Division Second Department, Court of Appeals Second Circuit, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island Supreme Courts and Immigration proceedings.

    Appellate Advocates’ attorneys also provide post-conviction legal representation in sex offender hearings, immigration proceedings, sex-traffic cases, and Domestic Violence Survivor Justice Act (DVSJA) cases. Appellate Advocates’ staff of attorneys, paralegals, social workers, and reentry staff, work collaboratively and across disciplines to deliver client-centered holistic representation.

    Position Description: Appellate Advocates is accepting applications for the position of Supervisor of Integrated Client Services. Integrated Client Services includes social work, reentry, and prison-based services. This position directly supervises a team of three to five including social workers, reentry staff, and client advocates, and plays a key role in shaping service delivery and staff development within the Integrated Client Services unit. The supervisor will provide both administrative oversight and clinical supervision to ensure the delivery of holistic defense. The Supervisor of Integrated Client Services will maintain a reduced caseload of clients. This position reports directly to the Director of Integrated Client Services.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Supervise team of social workers, reentry staff, and client advocates.
    • Assist Director with administrative tasks including case tracking, input, and assigning cases.
    • Edit any written work of assignees.
    • Work closely with interdisciplinary team including attorneys, paralegals, social workers, and reentry staff to advocate and support clients both in the community and who are incarcerated and/or detained.
    • Responsible for reduced caseload of clients with varying needs and case-related deadlines, ensuring timely action and intervention.
    • Prepare and submit written mitigation reports, social work assessments, biopsychosocials and other written materials for court submissions.
    • Gather factual mitigation through interviews, collateral interviews, and records.
    • Analyze records.
    • Advocate orally and provide testimony for clients in court.
    • Make appropriate referrals to address clients’ social service needs (substance abuse, mental health, housing, medical, and other benefits).
    • Conduct visits to jail and prisons to meet with clients.
    • Provide supportive counseling to ongoing caseload of clients.
    • Provide crisis intervention in the office and/or over the phone as needed.
    • Maintain case notes and documentation in an electronic database.
    • Flexibility to take on additional tasks aligned with program needs and departmental goals.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • License Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New York State.
    • Experience working in a public defender or legal advocacy setting.
    • Familiarity with the criminal appeals process.
    • SIFI certified.
    • At minimum five years of post MSW work experience.
    • At minimum two years of supervisory experience can include supervising MSW interns, staff, or leading a team.
    • Ability to manage caseloads while supporting staff with performance evaluation and training.
    • Demonstrated commitment to working with clients impacted by the criminal legal system.
    • Experience working with clients who have experienced DV and/or IPV.
    • Strong knowledge of trauma-informed, decarceral, and client-centered practices.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, and people skills.
    • Strong clinical assessment skills.
    • Strong written communication skills, including persuasive mitigation reports, biopsychosocial evaluations, and clinical assessments.
    • Proficiency in reviewing mental health, medical, and court records.
    • Comfort navigating legal systems, prisons/jails, and social service bureaucracies.
    • Ability to work with highly confidential and privileged information.
    • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a holistic defense model.
