    Description

    BOMB is a nonprofit, multi-platform publishing house that creates, disseminates, and preserves material generated by artists across all disciplines: interviews, essays, portfolios, and literature. Founded in 1981, with a mandate to deliver the artist’s voice, BOMB comprises a quarterly print magazine, a daily online publication, and a digital archive of previously published material available online for free. Annually, BOMB collaborates with 90 contributing editors and 300 writers—all practicing artists—to reach one million readers worldwide. The organization’s operating budget is $2.5M.

    BOMB is seeking a Director of Development to lead and oversee its fundraising efforts. The position reports directly to the founder and Editor-in-Chief and manages an Institutional Giving Manager and, in collaboration with the Associate Publisher, works with a Membership Coordinator. The Director will be responsible for creating and implementing individual and institutional giving strategies as well as working with BOMB staff and Board of Trustees on a range of planning initiatives: the Board Advised Future Fund, major and annual gifts, and Trustee expansion.

    Responsibilities

    • Work closely with Editor-in-Chief to develop fundraising goals for the organization;
    • With staff team and Board, develop creative, forward-thinking fundraising strategies to expand base of contributed support across all areas of giving: individual, high-end Membership, Gala, Future Fund, foundation, and government.
    • Work closely with Editor-in-Chief on short- and long-term organizational planning;
    • Establish solicitation priorities, manage prospect lists and research, and develop and execute targeted cultivation plans and solicitation strategies for the major gifts program, including individual donations and newly established Patron Memberships;
    • Plan and manage select cultivation and stewardship events for individuals.
    • Develop and implement an annual Year End Appeal.
    • Write grant proposals for special projects and long-term strategic planning;
    • Work with Editor in Chief on Board meetings and agendas, and engage Trustees in fundraising.
    • Oversee, with the development team, credits, and development-related online content;
    • Oversee tracking, documenting, and reporting on all prospects, pledges, donations, and grants.
    • With the Finance team and Editor in Chief, prepare and monitor revenue projections and provide accurate reporting.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of five years of experience and demonstrated success in fundraising, with increasing levels of responsibility.
    • Experience developing and implementing strategies in the areas of individual and institutional giving.
    • Experience developing and implementing major gift and endowment campaigns.
    • Experience managing a patron’s membership program is not required, but a plus.
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • High degree of organization, attention to detail, and ability to work on multiple deadline-driven projects.
    • Proficiency with donor and sales management software, ideally Salesforce;
    • Strong knowledge of and connections with the New York City funding community;
    • Strong knowledge of contemporary art and nonprofit publishing a plus.
    • Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to work well as part of a team.
