    Position

The Executive Editor is responsible for leading, along with the Editor-in-Chief, Jewish Currents’ editorial work. That includes commissioning and editing, serving as top editor or final reader for various kinds of pieces, editing particularly complex or lengthy reported features or essays, mentoring less experienced editors, supervising staff, and helping to shape the editorial strategy and vision for the magazine. The Executive Editor should be comfortable editing various kinds of pieces, from lyrical essays to short news and analysis to conversations to reviews.

    Who We Are

Founded in 1946, Jewish Currents is a magazine committed to the rich tradition of thought, activism, and culture on the Jewish left and the left more broadly. We cover a wide variety of topics, including the uses and misuses of antisemitism, the inner workings of Jewish communal organizations, Israel/Palestine politics on the ground and internationally, race and racialization, strategies and horizons of American left movements, the global rise of the far right, diasporic cultural expression, labor, climate, incarceration, immigration, and feminism.

We invite candidates from a broad range of backgrounds who are invested in and familiar with our work.

    Responsibilities

    • Commissioning articles for both web and print
    • Editing pieces for web and print with an emphasis on long-form features
    • Troubleshooting difficult pieces and supervising editorial staff
    • Working with the rest of the management team to manage workflow, address organizational challenges, and ensure a healthy workplace culture

    Qualifications

    • 5+ years of editing experience
    • Experience reporting or editing reported work, especially long-form reported features
    • Experience supporting or supervising staff
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Attention to detail on the page
    • Strong initiative and comfort with self-direction
    • Ability to multitask and to thrive in fast-paced environments with shifting tasks and priorities
    • Knowledge of our beats, be it (Jewish) art and culture; left politics; or Israel/Palestine

    Location and Team Structure

This position will be part of the editorial management team, with a preference for candidates based in New York City. The position is currently primarily remote, with the plan of moving to a hybrid-style office in 2026.

Jewish Currents is under contract with the WGAE. The Executive Editor is an excluded position.
