    The Public Affairs Department strategically and persuasively communicates Friends of the Earth’s positions and programmatic work to shape public perception, influence decision-making, and advance the organization’s campaign priorities. The Public Affairs Department encompasses web and social media, graphics and multimedia, new and traditional media, and government and political affairs. The Department is responsible for maintaining the organization’s brand, monitoring federal policy, and co-developing communications and legislative strategies with the Programs Department.

    Summary

    Friends of the Earth is looking for a Public Relations Portfolio Manager to develop organizational communications strategies, help manage media relations, and approve external-facing materials. The successful candidate will manage the organization’s relationships with the media (both new and traditional) and work collaboratively to develop messaging and narratives for the media, decision-makers, and target audiences. The PR Manager will also help staff prepare for interviews and public appearances and proactively look for opportunities to uplift the organization’s campaigns. The position will report to the Director of Public Affairs.

    The annual salary range for this full-time remote position is $82,000-$89,000. This position is part of the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) at Friends of the Earth. Offers are determined based on the relevant skills and experience required for the position.

    Essential Functions

    • 20%- Develop communications strategies for the organization, identifying target audiences and refining messaging to effectively promote the organization’s priorities and values.
    • 20% - Manage the organization’s media relations, which include responding to incoming requests and assisting with pitching campaigns to external media.
    • 20%- Prepare, coach, and support staff for media interviews and public appearances by developing key messages and enhancing delivery skills while ensuring clear, confident, and consistent communication.
    • 10%- Advise on communications opportunities for the organization’s campaigns.
    • 10% Edit, approve, and distribute press releases and advise on media cultivation.
    • 10%- Oversee political communications for announcements, events, and campaign activities with policymakers.
    • 5%- Evaluate the effectiveness of public relations campaigns by analyzing media coverage, audience engagement, and alignment with strategic communication goals.
    • 5%- Manage public relations consultant contracts and approve outputs.

    Required Qualifications

    • 6+ years of professional experience in media communications, public relations, or strategic communications
    • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing public relations strategies that drive campaign and organizational media goals
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with expertise in message development and narrative strategy
    • Ability to combine complex information into clear, engaging messaging tailored for target audiences
    • Experience using media monitoring and analytics tools to evaluate campaign impact and performance
    • Strong project management skills, with the proven ability to successfully manage cross-functional team projects from initiation to completion

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Demonstrated strengths in decision-making, time management, and task prioritization in fast-paced environments
    • Skilled at building and maintaining relationships within the organization and with external partners
    • Self-starter who demonstrates initiative and adapts creatively to evolving needs
