    Description

    The Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO is seeking a Political and Legislative Director to monitor legislation in multiple jurisdictions, support meetings of our Committees on Political Education, coordinate our candidate endorsement process, and more.

    The ideal candidate will thrive in a political setting, understand membership-centered organizing, and have stellar skills as project management and follow-up. This is a full-time exempt position.

    The Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO is a coalition of affiliated unions representing workers in the District of Columbia, Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, and Southern Maryland. Unions affiliated with the council represent workers in all industries, from service, hospitality, health, education, transportation, entertainment, construction, public and private sector. Our council is comprised of 150 unions representing thousands of workers. Together with our affiliated unions, we work to ensure all working people are treated fairly in safe and healthy working conditions, earn sustainable wages and benefits to attain a quality of life, and promote the ability of workers to collectively bargain.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Approximate share of time to be allocated to each responsibility is listed here as percentages here. These are estimates and will likely vary depending on projects.

    • Build political capacity of affiliated locals to mobilize activists and run campaigns. (20%)
    • Staff our Committees on Political Education for DC, Montgomery/Prince George’s and Tri-County. Provide support to the Committee chairs. (15%)
    • Coordinate our candidate and issue endorsement processes, including developing candidate questionnaires, a member-driven interview process, and making recommendations on candidate endorsements and contributions. (15%)
    • Provide technical assistance to affiliated local unions. (15%)
    • Develop and guide legislative and political coalitions and campaigns. (10%)
    • Coordinate with fellow Metro Washington Council staff on mobilization activities and other organizational priorities. (10%)
    • Coordinate campaign activity for endorsed candidates. (10%)
    • Monitor legislation across multiple jurisdictions (DC and Maryland’s Montgomery, Prince George’s, St. Mary’s, Charles, & Calvert counties). Conducting research on policies and issues, and draft testimony. (5%)

    Salary and Benefits

    • Union representation: This is a full time position within a bargaining unit represented by Washington-Baltimore News Guild TNG-CWA Local 32035.
    • Salary range: $85,000 - $90,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
    • Benefits: The Metro Washington Council offers a competitive benefits package including health care, vision, dental; paid sick leave and vacation; and a pension.
    • Location: The Metro Washington Council, AFL-CIO is a hybrid workplace with flexibility between work from home and work from our offices in downtown Washington, DC. (After Probationary Period)
