    About Pathologists Overseas

Pathologists Overseas is a nonprofit committed to expanding access to high-quality, affordable, and sustainable pathology and clinical laboratory services in low- and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs). We work hand-in-hand with local laboratories and the global pathology community to close critical gaps in diagnostic capacity and strengthen health systems. As a largely volunteer-driven organization, PO is powered by a dedicated team of professionals who lead our programs, operations, and governance. We are now seeking an experienced Executive Director to help guide the organization into its next phase of growth and deepen our impact worldwide.

    Position Overview

The Executive Director (ED) will provide strategic and operational leadership for PO, ensuring programs, partnerships, and organizational systems align with our mission and deliver measurable impact. This is a part-time, contracted role (approx. 20 hours/week) with flexible scheduling and a fully remote work environment. The ED will work closely with the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, staff, and volunteers to sustain and grow the organization’s global reach.

    • Provide oversight for programs, ensuring they meet donor requirements, align with PO’s mission, and deliver measurable outcomes.
    • Serve as the primary liaison between Board, Executive Committee, staff, volunteers, and partners, ensuring clear and consistent communication.

    Program Oversight and Partnerships

    • Support implementation of current programs, including laboratory information systems (LIS), professional development courses, and external quality assessment (EQA) enrollment.
    • In collaboration with the Executive Committee, develop and strengthen programmatic partnerships with ministries of health, international organizations, and technical partners to expand the reach and sustainability of PO’s programs.
    • Represent PO in public forums, conferences, and media to advance visibility and partnerships.
    • Travel on behalf of PO to partnering organizations and laboratories, both domestic and international; approximately 4 weeks total over a 12-month period.

    Governance and Compliance

    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations and reporting requirements in the U.S. and countries of operation.
    • Work with the Board and Executive Committee to establish and maintain effective governance structures, policies, and procedures.

    Financial Management

    • Oversee organizational finances, ensuring fiscal accountability and compliance with IRS and accounting standards.
    • Collaborate with the Board and Executive Committee on budgeting and financial planning, taking the lead with drafting budgets and facilitating decision-making.

    Fundraising and Resource Development

    • Manage current grants to meet program commitments.
    • Identify new funding opportunities and contribute to grant writing and donor cultivation.
    • Support community outreach and partnership development to diversify revenue streams.

Human Resources (HR) and Staff Management

    • Ensure that staff members are fulfilling their roles effectively, managing performance evaluations, ongoing feedback, engagement, development, and recruitment as needed.
    • Oversee efforts to build out HR policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with labor laws and relevant regulations.
    • Manage processes for recruiting new volunteers and ongoing engagement.
    • Foster an inclusive, mission-driven culture with staff and volunteers across diverse geographies and backgrounds.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Background in laboratory medicine or pathology
