    Position: Director of Operations & Budgeting

    Status and Location: Full-time, Washington, D.C.

    Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

    FLSA Salary Classification: Full-time Exempt

    Hiring Salary Range: $100,000 to $120,000/year

    Position Summary:

    PRRI (Public Religion Research Institute) is seeking a seasoned Director of Operations & Budgeting to oversee and strengthen the organization's operations and financial management. This includes leading financial planning and reporting, managing budgeting processes, overseeing administrative functions, supporting grants management, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards, and working closely with the CEO to drive organizational growth and efficiency. This is a full-time position with a hybrid-working format (staff works in the office two days per week); to comply with this policy, employees must reside in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia.     Responsibilities:

    Operations Management

    • Oversee daily administrative operations to ensure smooth functioning and alignment with organizational goals.
    • Evaluate and refine internal systems, policies, and procedures to enhance operational performance and implement best practices.
    • Serve as the primary liaison with external service providers including IT, HR, accounting, and property management to ensure effective support and legal compliance.

    Financial Management and Budgeting

    • Lead the annual budgeting process, quarterly reviews, and ongoing program and grant budget monitoring.
    • Develop and manage grant budgets, track expenditures, and ensure timely, accurate financial reporting for grants.
    • Prepare and analyze financial reports to inform decision-making and strategic planning.
    • Manage organizational cash flow, forecasting, and resource allocation to maintain financial health and support operational needs.
    • Coordinate and oversee the annual audit process, including communication with external auditors.

    Accounting and Compliance Oversight

    • In partnership with the external accounting firm, actively oversee daily financial operations including payroll, bank reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, and cash management.
    • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and financial reporting requirements for foundations and government entities.

    Required Skills/Abilities:

    • Proven leadership experience managing operations and administration for an organization or a large department.
    • Demonstrated success in grants management, including budgeting, tracking, and compliance.
    • Strong budgeting, performance tracking, and resource optimization skills; able to communicate complex financial concepts clearly.
    • Technologically savvy; experience with finance and accounting software and managing vendor relationships.
    • Excellent organizational, project management, and time-management skills; adept at balancing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
    • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Experience in nonprofit or research-focused organizations is a plus.

    Education and Experience

    • Minimum of a BA; MBA, CPA, or related advanced degree strongly preferred.
    • At least 7–10 years of professional experience, with 6+ years in broad financial and operations management roles.
