    Description

    The Gender Equality Law Center ("GELC") is a not for profit public interest law firm that advocates for the rights of individuals who have been discriminated against on the basis of their sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression, as well as related gender-based stereotyping.

    GELC represents primarily low wage individuals in gender discrimination cases, who would not otherwise be able to obtain legal representation. The majority of GELC's cases involve employment discrimination, but we also handle cases involving discrimination in school settings, in treatment in shelters and other public accommodations. Because gender-based discrimination does not happen in a silo, most of GELC's cases involve the intersection of gender discrimination with bias and prejudice on the basis of race, national origin, disability and/or immigration status, to name a few.

    GELC's three main areas of focus include: (1) pregnancy and caregiver rights; (2) sexual harassment and violence prevention; and (3) LGBTQIA rights.

    GELC is seeking a full time staff attorney with three or more years of legal experience to join our team. This is primarily a litigation position, although there is some non-litigation advocacy work involved.

    Responsibilities of the successful candidate include:

    1. Handling intake from our various referral sources;
    2. Conducting investigations of potential cases;
    3. Representing clients before administrative agencies in New York and in federal and state court;
    4. Supervising one or more law students and/or interns;
    5. Participating in a variety of state and national coalitions working to advance laws and policies to combat gender-based discrimination primarily in work and school settings.
    6. Conducting Know Your Rights trainings.
