    Description

    Under the supervision and guidance of the Outdoor Equity Coordinator, the Environmental Justice Outdoor Equity Program Assistant will support community-based campaigns as part of Legacy LA’s efforts to create a community that supports healthy youth development. The goal is to expand youth’s understanding of air pollution mitigation and improve community conditions through youth-led environmental justice campaigns.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Responsible for working with NET Staff, Legacy LA Outdoor Equity Coordinator, Legacy LA staff, and CNC staff to outreach and coordinate activities and transportation
    • Support young people as they advocate to ensure that the unique needs of young people are a priority for the systems designed to support them and in the broader community.
    • Recruit youth and conduct orientation as well as initial and ongoing training for young people on various topics such as legislative and systems advocacy, leadership development, and effective leadership skills
    • Coordinate intergenerational and bilingual (Spanish/ English) nature events and activities
    • Support with youth transportation
    • Support with the development and implementation of weekly bilingual leadership and social justice curriculum
    • Network with local government agencies and community partners to advocate for EJ legislation & the use of proactive use open space/greening of urban areas
    • Connect youth to EJ professionals, stewardships, and nature experiences
    • Support with Environmental Justice focused campaigns to increase community knowledge on the Natural Park and EJ efforts
    • Develop and implement solution-based learning
    • Work with the Environmental Justice Coordinator to implement EJ-focused programs for youth from the community.
    • Supervise and support youth participants
    • Support in advocacy organizing efforts in Ramona Gardens centering on Environmental Justice
    • Develop Weekly Work plans with the Environmental Justice Coordinator.
    • Participate in youth organizer staff evaluations a minimum of twice a year.
    • Attend and actively participate in Legacy LA staff meetings and planning sessions as needed.

    DESIRED SKILL SET

    • Bachelor's degree (preferred)
    • Have a valid CA Driver’s License
    • Strong desire and ability to communicate and work with youth ages 14 – 26 from racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender-diverse communities.
    • Experience working outdoors
    • Experience in planning and facilitating nature trips and activities for youth and community.
    • Interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to communicate and work effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender backgrounds.
    • Strong analytical writing skills and oral communication skills.
    • Ability to develop and conduct presentations and training sessions.
    • Desire to educate the community about the unique issues facing young people and communities
    • Understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias; and a genuine commitment to equity and inclusion.
    • Enthusiastic and positive attitude about changing systems and community perspectives.
    • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities at once.
    • Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team.
    • Ability to solve problems and manage conflict.
    • Ability to think and plan strategically.
    • Ability to apply evidence-based practice.
    • Bilingual Spanish is strongly preferred.
    • Familiarity and willingness to utilize social media, film, and other forms of documentation.
