    Description

Bronx Community Charter School is a small, progressive, inclusive K-8 school looking for a strong middle school math teacher to join our team.

    About BxC:

Founded in 2008, BxC is a K-8 school that is one of the few progressive public schools in the Bronx.

We are a small learning community founded on the principle that children learn best when they are active participants in their own learning. Our students raise questions about the world around them, engage with a wide range of materials, and learn through their interactions with each other and all of the adults in the school community. Children learn to use their minds well, cultivating strong intellectual habits and skills to become self-directed learners with clear passions and ambitions. Teachers know children deeply and develop a powerful curriculum to meet the needs and interests of their students. All members of our school community are committed to making thoughtful choices, advancing democratic values, and effecting change in the broader community.

    • BxC has 490 students in grades K-8.
    • Every class is co-taught, usually by a special educator and a general educator.
    • BxC has consistently high levels of staff retention.
    • BxC is proud to be one of the few charter schools in NYC with a unionized staff.

    Our progressive curriculum includes:

    • Latinx Culture and Identity and Black Lives Matter all-school studies of each year.
    • Interdisciplinary curriculum with many opportunities for deep and materials-rich studies.
    • Math curriculum–based on Illustrative Mathematics–that promotes collaboration and communication, and centers student engagement and thinking as described in Peter Liljedahl’s book Building Thinking Classrooms.
    • Social justice-oriented mathematical studies, such as analyzing data related to evictions in the Bronx by zip code and creating public service announcements using that data to define the problem and educate our community about tenant protections
    • Daily intensive small-group arts and tech electives that include dance, drumming, visual art, and technology.
    • An emphasis on social and emotional learning, including a strong advisory program.

    We are seeking teachers who:

    • Believe that children learn best when they are active participants in their own learning
    • Understand that children learn in different ways.
    • Believe that learning goes beyond the classroom, and are interested in taking students out into the community and bringing community resources into the classroom
    • Are eager for opportunities to work collaboratively with colleagues and families

    BxC offers:

    • Co-taught classes with 26 students per class.
    • A highly collaborative environment where teachers’ voices and opinions really matter
    • Coaches who collaborate closely with classroom teachers to design curriculum and support students.
    • Structures for collaboration and professional development supported by the schedule, including grade team meetings, 2 hour professional development sessions each week, and regular meetings with co-directors.
    • High levels of staff retention and a unionized staff

    Qualifications for Teachers:

Understanding of and commitment to the mission, goals, and philosophy of BxC ∙

Experience and demonstrated success in working with children

Commitment to continuous improvement and learning through professional development

Demonstrated expertise in the subjects taught

Hold or are working towards New York State certification

    Preferred:

    • Special education or ESL certification or experience
    • Proficiency in another language
