Addition (a project of Tides Center) was created to seed new working-class organizing across the United States. We do three things: launch new working class organizing projects from scratch, train people in the fundamentals of the craft of organizing and a return to common sense non-academic language, and help working class people tell their own story.
To do this, we identify great organizers with a strong vision to organize people overlooked by much of the organizing sector. This could include a specific constituency, a part of the country, or they have an idea of a new organizing model they want to try to reach more people. These organizers then come on board, and are provided the support, flexibility, and space needed to launch their project with as few limitations as possible.
To date, we have launched five projects, all of which remain in house, to organize working class communities. These include projects to organize working class moms, small-town seniors, overlooked and written-off places, video gamers, and people agitated by attacks on democracy. We also have the Fundamentals of Organizing training program and Working Class Storytelling Project.
Addition is seeking a Director of Organizational Strength to build new and stronger operations systems to support launching new working-class organizing, as well as expanding our existing projects. The ideal candidate is energized by creating and implementing structures, systems, capacities that allows organizers to be even more ambitious and creative in their organizing. You would do this all in coordination and collaboration with our organizing and administrative staff.
If you want to be part of a team that prioritizes organizing working class people, crave returning to common sense language, and is not afraid to try new things and see what happens, this is a place.
Organizers thrive at Addition. By protecting people’s time to do the work, and focusing on working class communities, organizers here have a high rate of success in launching new projects that deliver results for people. We think this is a time that requires trying new things and learning along the way. Creativity and a can-do attitude are encouraged and supported.
