NOFA/Mass is a non-profit organization with hundreds of members, focusing on education and advocacy around organic agriculture in Massachusetts.     Opportunity: Cultivate a shared vision for NOFA/Mass’s future

    • Provide leadership for a well-established, evolving nonprofit, guiding it through its next phase of growth and impact.
    • Partner with a collaborative, dedicated staff of ~15 to refine systems, strengthen programs, and scale impact based on organizational strengths and capacity.
    • Facilitate the development and execution of strategic goals through inclusive planning and decision-making.
    • Develop a diversified fundraising strategy aligned with the organization’s operating model and long-term sustainability.
    • Serve as a compelling spokesperson, shaping and amplifying the organization’s mission, vision, and impact to donors, partners, members, and the public.
    • Drive organizational growth—with increased revenue and role development directly linked to the success of this position.

    Responsibilities:

    • Leadership & Strategy: Provide strategic leadership to advance the organization’s mission, ensuring alignment with values of equity and inclusion across all operations and systems. Guide program development, evaluation, and innovation in collaboration with staff and leadership.
    • Fundraising & Development: Secure diverse funding streams—including grants, individual donations, memberships, sponsorships, events, and fee-for-service programs—to support and expand the organization’s impact
    • Financial Oversight: Develop and manage an annual budget of $850K–$1M; ensure sound financial practices, compliance, audits, and timely reporting to maintain nonprofit status and financial health.
    • Board & Governance: Collaborate closely with the Board of Directors on governance matters while overseeing daily operations and staff management. Oversee board and staff in the planning and execution of the annual meeting and retreats, including board recruitment, elections, and bylaw updates.
    • People & Culture: Supervise and support a remote team, fostering a culture of clarity, autonomy, accountability, and collaboration.
    • Operations & Compliance: Ensure compliance with all legal, tax, and regulatory requirements; manage filings, audits, insurance, and organizational standing as a 501(c)(3).
    • External Relations & Communications: Represent the organization through strategic networking with NOFA chapters, peer organizations, and government partners. Oversee consistent, professional, and mission-aligned external communications and branding efforts.

    Qualifications

    A successful candidate will offer:

    • Proven leadership experience in budgeting, financial oversight, and nonprofit management
    • Demonstrated success in fundraising across multiple channels
    • Strong commitment to clear communication, collaboration, and independent work
    • Experience in democratic leadership models, including consensus-based decision-making and facilitation of organizational change
    • Background in staff supervision, human resources, and people development and management, with a focus on equitable hiring and inclusive oversight
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Proficiency in QuickBooks, Salesforce, Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Office
    • Ability to work effectively with a diverse team and foster an equitable, inclusive workplace culture
    • Familiarity with agriculture, food systems, gardening, education, or related sectors, including nonprofit and governmental contexts
    • Experience developing, recruiting, engaging, and training a Board of Directors

    • This job can generally be accomplished from home
    • Must attend NOFA/Mass retreats and staff meetings, the winter conference, virtual department meetings, and select programs or events
    • Success in this role can result in increased revenue reflected in staff salaries, including the Executive Director position

    • Monthly stipend for internet and phone
    • Annual stipends for professional development and technology
    • Reimbursement for approved travel and business expenses
    • Four weeks of paid time off available annually; no more than two weeks consecutively
    • 3-month paid sabbatical available after 5 years in lieu of paid time off
    • NOFA/Mass Membership
