Community Health Worker - Perinatal Health

Community Health Worker - Eviction Prevention

    ✦ ✦ Organization and History ✦ ✦

✧ Mission: Presente! Maine is a grassroots, mutual aid organization by and for displaced and dispossessed Afro/Indigenous-Latines in Maine. With our community, we co-design and implement survival programs that proactively address our most urgent public health, climate, and human rights struggles, while also working within systems of power to create a more equitable, joyful, and resilient future.

The organization was founded in March 2020 in response to the vast and complex community needs of Afro & Indigenous peoples of the Latin American diaspora living in Maine. We have led critical initiatives to get people fed, prevent evictions, advocate for public health emergency funds for community-based organizations across Maine, deploy a public health response, restore indigenous foodways, and win Mainecare for all people regardless of immigration status, all while working with a small staff and a few dedicated volunteers.

Presente’s work emphasizes the importance of identifying root causes, tailoring programs to address the community’s specific needs, and connecting individuals facing similar challenges within the community. Presente targets three key program areas: Community Health and Wellness (Bienestar), Food Sovereignty & Land Stewardship, and Leadership & Community Power Building.

The Bienestar (BE) team supports community members by providing emotional and material support, advocating for their legal rights, providing family planning resources, delivering emergency food, identifying priority areas for community education, and connecting the community with land for the purpose of reaching “El Buen Vivir” and community solidarity.

✧ Location: Based at our Portland office, with expected travel to nearby counties to meet with and accompany community members to various appointments.

✧ Our Governance model: Presente! Maine follows a holacracy governance approach to determine where we spend our energy and resources. We visualize this approach as a larger supercircle with multiple circles and subcircles nestled within rather than a vertical hierarchy. This integrative decision-making process follows a structured approach to ensure that all perspectives are heard and considered before making a collective decision. We divide jobs by assigning “Circle Roles” with role-specific tasks based on strengths, interests, and the growing needs of our community and team. All circle members hold a primary circle role and multiple sub-circle roles.

We’re seeking two full-time Community Health Workers to join our BE Team based in Portland, Maine! One position will focus on providing perinatal care coordination and education through our “La Red” program, and the other will focus on assisting community members with eviction prevention and education on tenant rights.

✧ New hires for both positions will be enrolled in the 6-month Maine Community Health Worker (CHW) Apprenticeship Program.

The apprenticeship is a structured, paid 6-month training program designed to equip new CHWs with the skills and experience needed to thrive in the field. During the program, apprentices complete supervised on-the-job training and 144 hours of related instruction, including “CHW Core Competency Training” and specialized topics tailored to the population served.

As a CHW Apprentice, you will receive:

    • A starting wage of $25.00/hour, with an increase to $28.00/hour after completing the apprenticeship
    • Required CHW training at no cost to you
    • Monthly Stipends totaling up to $7,500 over 6 months (paid by MCD Global Health and are separate from regular wages)
    • Access to mentorship and professional development opportunities

✧ Primary Circle Role: Community Health Worker

✧ Additional Sub-Circle Roles: Perinatal Health Anchor OR Eviction Prevention Anchor, Care Coordinator, Outreach and Health Education Promoter, Community Partnerships Cultivator, Emergency Responder, “La Red” Anchor or Support
