    POSITION SUMMARY

    Beacon is a multi-million dollar nonprofit with multiple funding sources. The majority of the organization’s funding is passed through to health centers to provide reproductive healthcare services. The Staff Accountant will apply accounting principles to prepare financial reports, compile statements, analyze data, and ensure financial/grant compliance. This position also supports health centers in maintaining fiscal and grant compliance.

    WHAT YOU DO

    Specific job duties include, but are not limited to:

    Accounts Payable

    • Process accounts payable consistent with Beacon's approved budget and fiscal policies.
    • Process The Right Time claims consistent with project guidance.
    • Develop and maintain effective relationships with vendors.
    • Maintain contract and accounts payable files.
    • Identify vendors requiring 1099's, including requesting W-9's, as applicable.

    Financial Statements and Oversight

    • Prepare monthly and year-end closing entries.
    • Review monthly financial statements and prepare fiscal notes, including identifying areas of concern.
    • Support Director of Finance and Administration with preparation of annual budget, annual audit, 990 tax return, and working with accounting vendors.

    Fiscal Review and Health Center Grant Management/Compliance

    • Perform quarterly review of revenue and expenditure statements submitted by subrecipients.
    • In conjunction with the Programs Team and Director of Finance and Administration, support in-person and virtual program reviews with health centers in the network.
    • Develop and maintain effective relationships with health center staff.
    • Review subrecipient grant application documents for fiscal compliance.
    • Maintain proper documentation for all fiscal grant requirements.

    Contract/Grant Administration

    • Establish appropriate cost centers to allow for the tracking and validation of allowable grant-related transactions.
    • Identify fiscal reporting requirements and develop implementation strategies and processes to track and report.
    • Identify fiscal reporting due dates and ensure reporting requirements are met.

    Additional Duties/Responsibilities

    • Provide back-up to the Director of Finance and Administration, as needed.
    • Attend events, conferences, trainings, and meetings on behalf of Beacon, including tabling/outreach, as needed.
    • Participate in advocacy by meeting with legislators when requested, testify when identified as the best messenger for Beacon, and respond to action alerts distributed by Beacon.
    • Promote Beacon with passion and appropriate knowledge with partners and stakeholders.
    • Other duties as assigned that support Beacon in meeting its mission.

    WHO YOU ARE AND KEYS TO SUCCESS (the must-haves)

    To be successful in this job the following are crucial skills and abilities:

    Demonstrated accounting experience: 3-5 years of accounting experience, including creation of financial statements and presentation, application of regulations for financial grant compliance including across multiple cost centers, analysis of financial data, and management of grant budgets and narratives. Proficient with QuickBooks, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, and related software.

    Clear, precise, and detail-oriented communication: Ability to speak clearly on behalf of the organization and provide clear and accurate financial and grant compliance information.

    Creative, resourceful, resilient, and responsive: Be solution-focused and propose resolutions to issues without much guidance (but not afraid to ask questions). Proactively asks for help, anticipates problems, plans, and course-corrects where needed to get to the finish line. Ability to thrive in an ever-changing environment and make sound decisions in the face of ambiguity.

    The following are plusses, but are not requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
    • Nonprofit accounting experience.

    Work Environment

    • Beacon is a fast-paced organization that operates in a challenging external environment. You MUST be able to thrive in a work setting with changing priorities due to external factors.
    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

    Travel Required

    • Possess a valid driver’s license to operate a rental vehicle or personal vehicle.
    • Periodic travel is required for training, stakeholder meetings, site visits, etc. — approximately one trip per quarter, with potential for one out-of-state training per year. All travel may require overnight.

    Location and Schedule

    • May perform work from the Jefferson City office, or remotely, within the state of Missouri, or cities contiguous to MO. If working remotely, an in-home, dedicated work space is suggested.
    • General office hours are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday, with significant flexibility to manage schedules as needed and/or create alternative schedules. Some evening/weekend hours may be required.
