    Description

    The Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO is a coalition of affiliated unions representing workers in the District of Columbia, Montgomery County, Prince George’s County and Southern Maryland. Unions affiliated with the council represent workers in all industries, from service, hospitality, health, education, transportation, entertainment, construction, public and private sector. The council is comprised of 150 unions representing 150,000 thousands of workers. Together with our affiliated unions, we work to ensure that all working people are treated fairly and equally, earn sustainable wages and benefits, are able to work in a hazard free environment, and are able to negotiate from a position of strength in relation to work-related issues.

    Administrative Assistant Position

    We seek an individual to provide administrative support to the organization to ensure that we effectively and meet the needs of our affiliates. The Administrative Assistant in responsible for performing the following duties:

    • Serving as the first point of contact for affiliates, clients, and the general public in person, by phone, fax and email.
    • Answering the telephone, screening and directing calls, taking and relaying messages.
    • Perform light typing, copying and other clerical support.
    • Managing organizational calendar, sending out meeting notices and reminders to the appropriate audience.
    • Providing logistical support for organizational meetings and special events such as fundraisers, committee meetings, and staff meetings.
    • Processing outgoing and incoming mail.
    • Maintaining an inventory of office supplies.
    • Imputing data entry into Labor Key and maintaining affiliate payment reports.
    • Maintaining a current list of Executive Board members to include their contact information and union affiliation.
    • Maintaining a current list of Delegates to include their contact information and union affiliation.
    • Working with the Finance Department to file financial reports, receipts, documents, bank statements.
    • Assist with audits.
    • Maintain the President’s Calendar.
    • Take notes at the weekly staff meetings.
    • Prepare material for the monthly Executive Board & Delegates Meetings.
    • Monitor general office email to ensure that communications and information are routed to the proper staff member and/or contractor.
    • Make service calls as needed.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    We are seeking candidates who have a commitment to the labor movement and who enjoy working in a collaborative, fast-paced, nonprofit setting. Prior nonprofit and union experience is a plus. The candidate must have:

    • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications including Excel and Word, Google form, Mail Merge database, online scheduling and editing websites.
    • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
    • Impeccable organizational skills to include meticulous attention to detail.
    • High School Diploma

    Compensation

    Salary range $55,000 - $60,000 based on experience with benefits; health care, pension, PTO.

    This position is in the MWC’s bargaining unit of the Washington-Baltimore News Guild.

    Supervisory Control

    The position is under the direct supervision of the President of Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO or their designee.
