    The American Flood Coalition (AFC) is a nonpartisan group that drives transformational adaptation to higher seas, stronger storms, and more frequent flooding. AFC comprises more than 470 elected officials, local leaders, military groups, and businesses that work together to advance resilient and equitable flood solutions at the local, state, and federal levels. As the only organization that focuses on flooding and sea level rise across all levels of government, AFC is uniquely positioned to transform how communities around the country adapt to flooding and sea level rise.

    Position Summary

    We are seeking a strategic and dynamic Chief of Staff at the Associate Director level who will report to the Executive Director and work closely with the leadership team. This role will focus on supporting the Executive Director on the most critical opportunities and projects facing the organization, driving AFC's strategic goals, facilitating organizational reflection and learning, and providing cross-team project management. The Chief of Staff will also contribute to external engagement, including relationship building and communications. In this position, no two days are the same, and we’re looking for someone excited by a dynamic position and the opportunity to work on the most pressing issues facing the organization.

Our Chief of Staff will have high visibility with elected officials, advisors, and donors. Our ideal candidate is excited to work hand-in-hand with the Executive Director and learn all aspects of what it takes to run a nonprofit, is passionate about strategic planning and stakeholder engagement, and possesses outstanding organizational and communication skills.

    Responsibilities

    • Partner closely with the Executive Director on the top priorities for the organization, from investigating new topics and partnerships, to developing new initiatives, responding to major disasters, and thinking through the most difficult challenges in the space
    • Work with the Executive Director and leadership team to develop and communicate strategic organizational goals and track key results for success.
    • Facilitate organization-wide reflection and drive a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
    • Act as a strategic thought-partner and facilitator for AFC teams.
    • Prepare the Executive Director for engagements by delegating, drafting, and reviewing communications, presentations, background briefs, and talking points.
    • Collaborate with the Executive Director to drive AFC’s partnership and thought leadership strategy.
    • Hold and manage key organizational relationships, including AFC’s Executive Advisory Board, key donor contacts, and partners.
    • Lead communications with and develop materials for AFC’s Executive Advisory Board.
    • Supervise the Executive Assistant to the Executive Director.
    • Manage special projects for the Executive Director and leadership team.
    • Support the facilitation of leadership and staff meetings and team retreats.

    Qualifications

    • 7+ years of experience in strategy-focused roles in mission-driven organizations or companies, including people management experience.
    • Proven experience supporting and partnering with an Executive Director, Office of the Executive, or top leader to develop and implement strategies in quickly changing environments, including small non-profits, start ups, or political offices.
    • Ability to assess big opportunities and bold ideas against organizational priorities and comfort facilitating discussions and decisions with senior leaders.
    • A track record of managing complex projects and helping others manage competing priorities and deadlines.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including designing and creating slide presentations.
    • Familiarity or passion to learn about adaptation and resilience.
    • Bachelor’s degree required.
