    Program: HELP Unity | Location: 23 W 106th Street, New York, NY 10025

    What You'll Do:

    The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) will serve adult female clients at HELP USA’s women's shelter and is responsible for providing comprehensive mental health services to clients within the facility. This role involves assessing clients' psychological needs, diagnosing mental health conditions, and creating individualized treatment plans utilizing various forms of short-term individual psychotherapy and other proven and accepted modalities of treatment in collaboration with other healthcare professionals and social work staff.

    Your responsibilities will include:

    Patient Assessment

    • Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations of adult clients, including mental status examinations and risk assessments.
    • Gather comprehensive medical, psychiatric, and social histories.

    Diagnosis and Treatment

    • Diagnose mental health disorders under DSM-5 criteria.
    • Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs, incorporating modalities of psychological assessment and treatment, social work assessment and intervention, substance abuse counseling, and medical care.

    Medication Management

    • Prescribe, monitor, and manage psychiatric medications as appropriate.
    • Educate clients about medication use, benefits, and potential side effects.

    Psychotherapy

    • Provide individual sessions using various therapeutic modalities.
    • Facilitate support groups and psychoeducational classes.

    Collaboration:

    • Work closely with and refer clients to psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, substance abuse counselors, and other healthcare providers as necessary.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient care and treatment progress.

    Crisis Intervention

    • Respond to psychiatric emergencies and provide immediate intervention and stabilization. Contact emergency rooms and inpatient services to which patients have been referred to ensure continuity of care. Receives calls from the same in the interest of conveying information regarding patient care. Information shared is compliant with State and Federal rules of confidentiality.
    • Develop safety plans for at-risk patients.

    Documentation

    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, treatment notes, and progress reports.
    • Ensure compliance with legal requirements and ethical standards in documentation.

    Advocacy and Support

    • Advocate for patients’ rights and access to necessary services.
    • Assist patients in navigating social services and community resources.

    Education and Training

    • Provide training and supervision to nursing and social work students.
    • Engage in ongoing professional development and stay current with advancements in psychiatric nursing.

    You're a great fit for this role if you have:

    • Master’s degree in nursing with a specialization in psychiatric mental health.
    • Current and valid Nurse Practitioner license.
    • Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) preferred.
    • Previous experience in mental health or social work settings is highly desirable.
    • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
    • An interest in working a part-time schedule.
