    Description

    Day One is seeking a qualified candidate to work with our Wildfire Preparedness Program under the Environmental Programs Division, in partnership with a national emergency preparedness agency. The Wildfire Preparedness Coordinator will work throughout the communities of the San Gabriel Valley and be able to report to Day One offices located in Pasadena, El Monte, and Pomona. The Wildfire Preparedness Coordinator will work closely with Day One Directors and contribute to Day One programming. The position will work to build knowledge around preparedness and increase community engagement and coordination related to wildfire preparedness. Work activities will primarily take place throughout the San Gabriel Valley with some activities in the Antelope Valley. This is a 2-year contract, with the possibility of extension depending on grant allocations.

    SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Lead Day One’s Wildfire Preparedness Grant.
    • Lead online and in-person informational sessions and workshops to educate the community about wildfire preparedness strategies.
    • Conduct outreach, including canvassing, flyering, and participation and planning of community events.
    • Develop educational materials, such as handouts, posters, social media posts and newsletter entries on topics such as firewise communities and defensible spaces as part of a fire safe education campaign.
    • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of all local, state, and federal emergency alert systems, fire weather warnings, weather radar/winds and assist the community in understanding and becoming active users of these resources.
    • Assist community members with the development of household wildfire preparedness plans and help advance new Fire Safe Councils.
    • Implement surveys, gather and analyze community feedback.
    • Represent Day One at community gatherings, events, and coalition meetings.
    • Manage the program's administrative and data support needs, ensuring compliance, data integrity, and effective tracking of key metrics and resources.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of DayOne organizational priorities, such as communications materials, programming and events, and identification and development of new grants.
    • Supervise and mentor project staff and volunteers
    • Additional duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

    • At least two years of disaster preparedness, environmental health, or climate science/resilience, preferably in the San Gabriel Valley. Education and/or lived experience can be substituted.
    • Strong relationship building and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to independently track multiple project components and meet deadlines.
    • Passion about environmental justice, wildfire preparedness education, and community outreach.
    • Work proactively, independently, and as a team member.
    • Ability to communicate and work effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender backgrounds.
    • Be curious to learn, advance your career, and be willing to contribute to diverse programming.
    • Must have access to reliable transportation to perform job duties, a valid CA Driver’s License, and meet the state-required amount of personal automobile liability insurance. This position requires regular travel to and from events and the handling and carrying of materials of up to 25 pounds.
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

    PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

    • Ability to speak Spanish, Mandarin and or Cantonese.
    • Experience with digital communication tools and social media.
    • Familiarity with Canva and Google Suite.
    • Familiarity with California policy landscape and governance processes.

    NON-TRADITIONAL WORK HOURS

    This position requires working non-traditional hours that may require early mornings, evenings and weekends in order to accommodate youth and family schedules, school district meetings, city council meetings, community events/meetings, and any other convenings that support the completion of project and organizational goals.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Works both indoor and outdoor in varying temperatures and weather conditions
    • Physical effort Lift and/or Transport equipment up to 50 pounds or more
    • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, sitting, kneeling, walking
    • May on occasion be exposed to loud sounds and distracting noise levels
    • Working conditions and physical demands which relate to the essential functions of the position can vary and change on a daily basis.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Must be able to meet organizational requirements via DOJ+FBI background clearance, TB clearance and COVID vaccine documentation.
