About Us

The mission of the Adult Learning Program(ALP) is to provide an innovative, learner-centered, and participatory educational program for educationally disadvantaged and Limited English Proficient adults. In addition to providing educational resources, the program seeks to enable historically disenfranchised individuals and communities, including refugees and immigrants, to more fully access, utilize, participate in, and impact the resources and development of their city and their communities.

Our goal is to help students attain the education, skills, and self-confidence that will enable them to more fully participate in their communities and in the education of their children, and that will further enhance opportunities for personal development and economic self-sufficiency.

ALP currently offers 6 levels of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), three levels of ABE/High School Equivalency (HiSET, formerly GED) and distance learning; all of which provide 9-10 hours of weekly instruction. Classroom-based learning is supplemented by weekly 2-3 hour volunteer tutoring sessions offered by community members who are trained and supervised by our volunteer coordinator. Some tutors also provide assistance in classrooms. In addition, we provide career planning assistance, college preparation, training or employment advising, and computer lab classes.
