    About Us

Through localised solar engineering, livelihood training and participatory education, Barefoot College delivers innovative programmes to support rural women as agents of change, especially in the indigenous, western highlands regions of Guatemala where our training centre is based. Barefoot’s solution focuses on creating grassroots change that is stable over the long-term, demystifying, democratising and decentralising technology and education to foster self-sufficiency, resilience and sustainability among those living in rural poverty.

Our ten-week residential Solar and ENRICH programmes train illiterate or semi-illiterate women from rural, off-grid communities with the skills and knowledge to become solar engineers who assemble, install, repair and maintain solar home lighting systems in their communities, while also building key life skills, including in climate action, health and wellbeing, entrepreneurship and digital skills.

Our Livelihoods programme provides an agroecological demonstrative garden, increasing our programmes' self-sufficiency and putting our health and wellbeing modules into practice.
