  • Mission

The READ Center changes lives through adult literacy by helping adults develop reading, writing, math, financial and digital skills so they can better fulfill their goals and roles as citizens, workers and family members. The READ Center provides classroom instruction, one-to-one tutoring, and community programs to adults who want to improve their literacy skills.

    About Us

Learning to read as an adult is complex, and our students have often had limited support or success in school. READ meets students where they are and helps them attain their literacy and life goals. The ability to read well is something many of us take for granted. We assume that every adult can read well. For one in six adults in Richmond, that is not the case. Imagine trying to understand your prescription, get a driver’s license, apply for a job online, or help your child with homework when you struggle to read. Low literacy traps families in a cycle of low educational attainment and poverty that is hard to break. Everyone needs and deserves a literate life.
