Adult volunteers who are very committed to positive dog-training and skilled with a wide range of large and very spirited dogs, especially pit bull terriers and mixes, are needed on Saturdays, 4- 6pm, weekly or alternating weeks.
This is an exhilarating and deeply fulfilling experience, albeit arduous, using your dog-savvy skills to help some of the most vulnerable dogs in King County.
Initial commitment: training, then 50 hours * once-a-week shifts * two hours per week or so *
(weeks off okay for vacations and so forth).
Keys to success with RASKC dogs: kindness, positive reinforcement, and the ability to skillfully get dogs in/out of the kennel area quickly so they can enjoy fresh air outside!
Typically you would share a shift with three other volunteers.
The focus is on giving dogs a refreshing change of pace outside of their kennel- on a leisurely stroll nearby to sniff grass, engaging in other enrichment activities, or a more energetic walk.
Dog walkers are color-coded according to the type of dog they are eligible to handle.
. Green: Most Dog Walkers start as color "green" are eligible to work with our friendliest dogs.
. Blue: Dog Walkers who are assessed as "blue" are eligible to take out the shy dogs and the friendly dogs.
. Red: Dog Walkers who are identified as "red" are eligible to walk any of the adoptable dogs, including the ones that need skillful handling.
RASKC needs "red" Dog Walkers.
