    About SILO²

SILO² (Social Intelligence Laboratory for Opportunities in Systems Innovations with Localized Outcomes) is a nonprofit innovation lab dedicated to preventing violence, reducing harm, and fostering community resilience. We bridge emerging technologies and multidisciplinary expertise with communities that need them most, particularly in remote or under-resourced areas. We believe in the true interdisciplinary approach of whole of community; our technical engineers sit at the table with everyone else as we develop and deploy harm reduction and violence prevention toolkits and programs. Because every person has a part to play in making our world safer and more resilient.

Our work focuses on developing and deploying systems innovations for social good—including free trainings, knowledge platforms, and digital tools—to create safer, more resilient futures for all.

Volunteer Staff Position: User Experience Developer

As our volunteer User Experience Developer, you’ll help design and build user-friendly digital experiences that serve educators, first responders, community leaders, and the public. You'll work with our technical and creative teams to bring learning modules, online resource portals, and interactive tools to life—across platforms like Drupal, Wix, and custom-built web systems.

This is an ideal role for a UI/UX Engineer or other technology professional who wants to contribute to building real impactful tools for communities that have extensive barriers to access technology sectors. If you are someone with a background in frontend development or UX design who’s passionate about human-centered technology, social equity, and community-based impact, we want to work with you!

    Responsibilities

    • Collaborate on the design and development of eLearning modules, public portals, and resource platforms.
    • Create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes using tools like Figma, Adobe XD, or InVision.
    • Implement and refine responsive, accessible user interfaces using HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and PHP (for Drupal customizations).
    • Customize themes and components in Drupal, Wix, and low-code/no-code environments.
    • Ensure WCAG accessibility compliance and mobile-first design principles.
    • Translate user feedback and analytics into iterative UX improvements.
    • Work alongside developers, content editors, and program leads to align visual design with mission objectives.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Experience with UI/UX design and frontend development (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript).
    • Familiarity with Drupal theming and basic PHP templating (Twig).
    • Working knowledge of Wix Editor or Velo (or similar low-code platforms).
    • Experience designing accessible, responsive web interfaces.
    • Strong design sensibility and ability to work from wireframe to production.
    • Excellent communication skills and willingness to work across creative and technical teams.
    • Experience with eLearning UX, LMS platforms, or SCORM content.
    • Bonus: Experience or familiarity in harm reduction, social services, violence prevention or community development. Experience in Microsoft 365 and Azure environments.

    Commitment & Support

    • Time commitment: 3–5 hours/week (flexible, remote).
    • Duration: Minimum 3-month commitment preferred.
    • You’ll work with a multidisciplinary, passionate team of professionals in a creative, impact-driven environment, including professionals in design, international affairs, counterterrorism, social sciences research, psychology, data engineering, software engineering, fullstack devops, and violence prevention.
    • This is a remote volunteer position; meetings and collaboration are conducted via Discord, Zoom, and shared platforms.
