    Description

Volunteer on a Relief, Inc. Grow Garden

Do you have experience with using a tape measure, straight line, composting, garden tools, or plumbing?

We are looking for a group of six to eight volunteers to finish our raised garden boxes by aligning them three feet apart, leveling the soil, laying down cardboard boxes, and adjusting the water source.

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Join us in a transformative Community Garden Project aimed at revitalizing our local garden space to foster community engagement and sustainable gardening practices. This hands-on project involves several key activities designed to enhance the garden's productivity and aesthetic appeal. Volunteers will play a crucial role in preparing garden boxes, optimizing soil composition, and creating a beautifully structured garden environment. Food grown from the garden will be donated to food pantries in our community.

    Volunteer Tasks Include:

    • Leaf and Debris Clearance: Clear all dry leaves, bags, and boxes around the garden boxes, depositing them into the boxes for composting.
    • Soil Preparation: Till and mix the soil within the boxes, add compost, preparing it for planting.
    • Log Layering for Hugelkultur Beds: Dig trenches in the boxes, lay down wood logs, and cover them with mixed soil to create rich, moisture-retentive planting beds.
    • Garden Box Adjustment and Walkway Creation: Realign the garden boxes to ensure enough space (3 feet) for a wheelbarrow to fit between them. Install cardboard and weed blocker layers to suppress weeds and define pathways.
    • Plumbing Adjustment: Realign to garden boxes.
    • Potted Sago Palm Arrangement: Enhance the garden's perimeter by laying cardboard and weed blockers in straight lines, pinning them down, and arranging potted Sago palms to frame the garden attractively.
