    Legal Advisor - Board of Advisors (Nonprofit) 

    Position: Volunteer

    Commitment: Estimated 1-4 hours/month

    Reports to: Executive Director / Board Chair

    About Us

    Skills of LIfe Cafe empowers neurodiverse teens and young adults, including those with mild

    intellectual disabilities, through vocational training in a real-world café setting. Our mission is to

    build inclusive workforce pathways and skills for long-term success and independence.

    Role Summary

    We are seeking a Legal Advisor to serve on our Board of Advisors. This non-voting, strategic

    role will provide occasional legal guidance and support to help protect and strengthen our

    organization as we grow. You’ll advise on issues like nonprofit compliance, contracts,

    employment law, and liability-ensuring that our mission is backed by solid legal footing.

    Key Responsibilities

    ● Provide general legal guidance in areas relevant to nonprofit operations

    ● Review or consult on contracts, agreements, waivers, or MOUs

    ● Advise on risk management and liability concerns (particularly around working with

    youth)

    ● Support understanding of local/state nonprofit laws and reporting requirements

    ● Consult on employment law or volunteer/staff legal matters (in collaboration with HR

    advisor, if applicable)

    ● Help ensure organizational policies align with best legal practices

    ● Flag potential legal risks and recommend mitigation strategies

    ● (Optional) Assist with intellectual property, insurance, or real estate/legal lease issues if

    applicable

    Qualifications

    ● Licensed attorney in good standing (retired or active status welcome)

    ● Experience with nonprofit law, employment law, contracts, or general counsel

    ● Knowledge of legal considerations in youth-serving organizations a plus

    ● Ability to explain legal matters clearly to non-legal audiences

    ● Passion for advancing equity, inclusion, and social good through legal service

    Time Commitment

    ● Estimated 1-4 hours/month (flexible, on-call as needed)

    ● Attend 1-2 advisor meetings per year (virtual or in-person)

    ● Available for periodic consultation by phone or email
