    Description

Work on Climate (WoCl) is a leading non-profit focused on building the workforce to solve climate change equitably and justly. You probably know us for our online community that has helped thousands of people find jobs and start companies, highlighted in most major business press, from Fast Company to New York Times. However, our work goes even farther, seeking to mobilize the entire workforce as a force for system-wide change.

Being part of our volunteer team means more than just joining a community. It’s an invitation to create real-world impact by confronting urgent climate challenges with the skilled minds ready to solve them. Together, we’re bridging the talent gap to build the climate-focused economy we envision.

Work On Climate’s Founders subcommunity has more than 4,000 members and aims to help early-stage founders (people looking to start their own companies) in Work On Climate solve their challenges and build lasting helpful work relationships. We are seeking a volunteer to help run events and programs to help members make meaningful connections and access valuable resources.

    Time commitment

5 hours/week consistently for the next 6+ months (We’d like a minimum of 6 months, and love it when volunteers stay on longer).

    What’s in it for me?

    • Your work will help climate tech founders develop their businesses and networks, helping unlock the potential of the entire climate ecosystem nurtured by Work On Climate
    • Get hands-on experience that looks great on your resume and LinkedIn! Employers know and respect us
    • Collaborate with thought leaders and experts in the space, including the community organizers from Microsoft’s renowned 10k member employee sustainability community who run the broader subcommunity team
    • Grow your network, reputation, and influence

    What will I do?

You will work with other Work on Climate volunteers to cultivate the interactions that benefit our Founders subcommunity. This may include:

    • Running speaker or social events for our founder community to increase connectivity
    • Facilitating workshops with small groups of founders as their build their businesses
    • Building content or facilitating discussions in our community channel to help members access resources or connect with each other

What skills and commitment do I need?

    • A “founder mindset” – doing whatever it takes, and learning whatever skills are needed to accomplish the goal of our subcommunity. Today you might craft a highly actionable message, tomorrow you might run an event or organize information on a Notion page.
    • Ability to show up consistently and reliably for weekly calls to build relationships, carry project work forward, and brainstorm with the Subco team required (currently meeting at 8am PST on Tuesdays, can flex based on group needs)
    • Excellent individual and group communication skills, ability to work with people of different work and communication styles across time zones and cultures
    • High creativity, curiosity, and attention to detail – a strong drive to get the little things right without being told to, or needing someone to check your work
    • High autonomy and reliability, being able to commit to Expectations for a WoCl volunteer for the next 3-6 months
    • Experience in project management, events, or executive coaching is a plus

    Common Challenges

    • It can be challenging to follow through on community work, as it tends to be ambiguous and expansive
    • Can be difficult to measure the output or impact of our work
    • As the subco team evolves, your focus areas and priorities may shift accordingly
