    Caring companion for terminally ill

    How can you provide support during this time?

    Volunteers serve patients by being an objective listener and companion.

    Volunteers serve as a link between the patient's medical care and emotional support. You will be matched with a patient based on your interest, availability, and location. As a volunteer you provide companionship to the patient or much needed caregiver break for families.

    What do I do?

    • Visit patients in their home or nursing home - Act as a caring, compassionate companion to patient
    • Read, watch tv, look at pictures, simply " be there" or attend activities with patient.
    • Help with small household chores- cooking meals, folding laundry, straightening up a room.
    • provide additional socialization and engagement with patient
    • receive training and support from a volunteer manager.

    What DON'T you do?

    Provide medical care, feed patient, Visit every day, transport patient, anything you're uncomfortable doing.

    What is hospice?

    Hospice is medical care to those that have been diagnosed with a terminal illness with an expected 6 months or less in life. Hospice provides comfort and support to patients and caregivers through registered nurse visits, aid visits, social worker support, spiritual care support, and bereavement. Volunteers play a vital role in helping with patient's care by being an additional resource for patients and families.

    Training/ orientation is held at the office and is self-pace.
