    About Us

The City of Berkeley’s Clean Water Program was established to protect local creeks, San Francisco Bay, and our community from pollution carried by stormwater. For decades, the program has worked to meet state and regional water quality requirements while fostering community stewardship of our waterways.

Our Goals: Reduce stormwater pollution at its source. Protect fish, wildlife, and creek habitats. Maintain safe and clean storm drain systems. Educate and engage the community in water stewardship. Meet and exceed compliance with the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board’s Municipal Regional Stormwater Permit (MRP).

Our Programs include but are not limited to; Maintaining medallions on storm drains. Maintaining and monitoring bioretention areas to capture and filter runoff. Pollution Prevention: Enforcing best management practices (BMPs) for businesses, construction sites, and municipal operations. Community Engagement: Leading volunteer creek cleanups, school outreach, Adopt-a-Spot, adopt-a-storm-drain, and adopt-a-bioswale (coming soon). Trash Reduction: Conducting on-land visual trash assessments and recommending full trash capture devices to reduce litter entering waterways.
