    Position Summary

    The TCE Site Coordinator Intern plays a vital leadership role in supporting the IRS-sponsored Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program. This internship offers hands-on experience in nonprofit program coordination, volunteer management, and tax preparation services, all while helping older adults (60+) access free, high-quality tax assistance. The intern helps lead day-to- day site operations, supports volunteers, and ensures compliance with IRS standards. This is an ideal opportunity for students or early-career professionals interested in public service, nonprofit work, accounting, social work, or community outreach.

    Program Area: Free Tax Assistance for Older Adults

    Reports to: Volunteer Manager

    Location: Center of Concern, 1665 Elk Blvd., Des Plaines, IL 60016

    Time Commitment: January through April (Spring Semester)

    Stipend: $500.00 Stipend

    Key Responsibilities

    Program Coordination & Administration

    • Assist with managing daily operations of the TCE site to ensure smooth client and
    • volunteer flow.
    • Help coordinate volunteer schedules, manage client appointments, and handle logistics.
    • Maintain organized records and reports as required by the IRS and host organization.
    • Support implementation of IRS Quality Site Requirements (QSR).

    Volunteer Support

    • Help facilitate volunteer training and on boarding in partnership with the Volunteer
    • Manager.
    • Ensure volunteers have needed supplies, software access, and support.
    • Serve as a supportive presence for volunteers, answering questions and offering guidance.

    Client Service and Quality Assurance

    • Support client intake by checking documentation and explaining the process.
    • Contribute to a positive client experience, especially for older adults and those unfamiliar
    • with the tax system.
    • Assist in reviewing completed tax returns under supervision to ensure accuracy and
    • compliance.

    Qualifications

    • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree in accounting, business, public
    • administration, social work, or a related field.
    • Interest in community service and working with older adults.
    • Strong communication and organizational skills.
    • Ability to complete IRS-provided training and certification.
    • Basic comfort with computers, spreadsheets, and/or tax software (training provided).
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a fast-paced environment.
