Data & Fiscal Policy Intern

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Data & Fiscal Policy Intern works closely with the Fiscal Policy Team to advance FPWA’s mission under the guidance of the Fiscal Policy Analyst. In this role, you will analyze internal and public data, build and maintain data visualizations, perform research and analysis on local, state, and federal tax and budget policy, contribute to publications, and offer ideas for new research.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Build and maintain datasets related to city, state, and federal fiscal budget data.
• Assist in the design and maintenance of tax and budget data visualizations and interactives (E.g. NYC Funds Tracker).
• Assist in quantitative and qualitative research and data analysis on a range of anti-poverty issue areas across national, state, and local policy.
• Support/create briefs, blogs, and reports on a range of issue areas related to federal fiscal policies.
• Collaborate with fiscal policy team and communications staff to promote findings and strengthen fiscal policy work via infographics, social media, etc.
• Provide general support for all members of the policy team.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE INCLUDE:

• Currently enrolled or recently graduated from a graduate program in public policy, social work, public health, economics, computer science, statistics or related field.
• Introductory understanding of tax and budget policies and social safety net programs, preferably at the state and city level.
• Must be able to work between 20 to 25 hours per week
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
• Proficiency in at least one statistical analysis software (Stata, R, etc.) and data visualization (Tableau, PowerBi).
• Strong interest in public policy, social justice and civil rights.
• Creative and adaptive problem solver.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Flexibility and willingness to learn.

COMPENSATION:

Starting at $18-25 per hour depending on experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

As part of building a culture where employees and interns can do their best work, FPWA currently employs a hybrid model. Employees and interns are in-office twice per week and senior leadership is in-office three times per week. This role would follow a hybrid schedule of two days per week in the office. We observe company-wide remote Fridays.

Given the work and need for in person engagement routinely with stakeholders and with FPWA staff, the Data & Fiscal Policy Intern is a NYC-based position. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.
