    Opportunity: Travelling Literacy Program Teacher for First Nations Communities

    IMPORTANT:

    Location: TRAVEL to Gesgapegiag, Quebec REQUIRED **

    Start Date: October 16, 2025 - December 12, 2025

    Duration: 8 weeks

    The STEM Montessori Academy of Canada (SMAC - SIAC) is a registered not-for-profit organization specializing in science technology engineering and math (STEM) programming open to all students with the mission to deliver top-notch STEM literacy and application.

    The STEM program will educate students from preschool to high school. The SMAC will specialize in an advanced, bar-none STEM-based educational curriculum that emphasizes the interconnected subject areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

    We are offering an unpaid internship for a passionate and dedicated Travelling Literacy Program Student Teacher (ECE - Early Childhood Education co-op, or those who require experience welcome) to join our team and deliver STEM and literacy-based learning to Indigenous communities. This role requires on-site teaching for 8 consecutive weeks. This role requires creativity, patience, and a commitment to nurturing each student's potential.

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Implement and teach engaging literacy lesson plans that meet curriculum standards and cater to diverse learning styles.
    • Support and lead other staff members and volunteers.
    • Create a supportive classroom atmosphere that encourages student participation and collaboration.
    • Assess and evaluate student progress through various methods, including tests, assignments, and observations.
    • Provide constructive feedback to students and communicate regularly with parents regarding their child’s development.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to enhance teaching strategies and share best practices.
    • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with educational trends and methodologies.
    • Maintain classroom organization and manage student behavior effectively.
    • Teach students STEM-based skills across a range of subjects including literacy:Math - Reading - Early Childhood Education.
    • Incorporate Indigenous culture and knowledge where appropriate to create a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment.
    • Create literacy strategies tailored to students with lower literacy levels, ensuring that STEM lessons are accessible and effective.
    • Train local teachers on how to roll out STEM or literacy-based lessons, providing them with tools, strategies, and resources to continue STEM education after your assignment ends.

    Requirements:

    • Working towards a teaching or cultural studies diploma
    • Ability to stay on location for 8 weeks
    • Experience working with lower literacy students and Indigenous communities
    • Familiarity with Indigenous culture
    • Passion for literacy or STEM education

    Qualifications:

    • Study in a teaching field related to ECE, Literacy or STEM fields, or provincially certified teacher.

    Experience

    • Seeking teaching or literary studies diploma, ECE, or a Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field is strongly preferred
    • Previous teaching experience is highly desirable but not mandatory; new graduates are encouraged to apply.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for interacting with students, parents, and staff.
    • Proficiency in classroom management techniques and the ability to adapt lessons for various learning needs.
    • Familiarity with educational technology tools is a plus.

    We can accommodate an immediate virtual placement hybrid-model start in your local area to meet the needs of your coop hours if needed, meaning, you can begin right away for the fall semester. If you have less hours to fulfill, we can start you at a later date. This opportunity must begin by October 15, 2025. On-site travel will begin October 17, 2025.
